Next week, for the third time in eight years, Donald Trump will be nominated as the Republican Party’s candidate for president of the United States. A once great political party now serves the interests of one man, a man as demonstrably unsuited for the office of president as any to run in the long history of the Republic, a man whose values, temperament, ideas and language are directly opposed to so much of what has made this country great.
It is a chilling choice against this national moment. For more than two decades, large majorities of Americans have said they are dissatisfied with the direction of the country, and the post-Covid era of stubborn inflation, high interest rates, social division and political stagnation has left many voters even more frustrated and despondent.
The Republican Party once pursued electoral power in service to solutions for such problems, to building “the shining city on a hill,” as Ronald Reagan liked to say. Its vision of the United States — embodied in principled public servants like George H.W. Bush, John McCain and Mitt Romney — was rooted in the values of freedom, sacrifice, individual responsibility and the common good. The party’s conception of those values was reflected in its longstanding conservative policy agenda, and today many Republicans set aside their concerns about Mr. Trump because of his positions on immigration, trade and taxes. But the stakes of this election are not fundamentally about policy disagreements. The stakes are more foundational: what qualities matter most in America’s president and commander in chief.
Mr. Trump has shown a character unworthy of the responsibilities of the presidency. He has demonstrated an utter lack of respect for the Constitution, the rule of law and the American people...

The only thing it’s good for is kindling fires 🔥.
They usually endorse one (a Republican) in the primaries. McCain comes to mind.
I’d say every single demonrat voter has ALL of those traits.
Assistant gangsters support gangster government as long as they get a cut of the loot.
Why hasn’t “Trump derangement Syndrome” been classified as a mental disease, marked by a person’s dangerous cognitive disassociation with marked violent tendencies when ever hearing or seeing the word “trump”?. Donaldtrumpitusaphobia?
The Commie propagandists speak.
They need to tell it to their comrades—North Koreans.
“This is tough for the times in terms of them making an endorsement in the election.”
They think SloJo will be replaced, but they know any Dim will lose to Pres. Trump. Just getting warmed up for DJT2.
Joe Biden betrayed America when he opened the border and allowed millions of illegal aliens to invade the United States.
Now they like the Republican candidates they hated when they were running. Years from now, they’ll tell us how great Trump was, but the new guy is a disaster.
It is the GnuYakThymes, all the news that’s fit to punt.
“A full throated ‘Trump is the devil’ campaign is their only hope.”
I agree-I think someone told Joe that Obama stabbed him in the back and Joe has built a mental bunker. He’s angry and immovable now.
And then he woke up....Hopefully.
That's an extremely confusing paragraph. The first two sentences are saying Reagan etc. had good policies. They put the word "once" in there, meaning that the GOP no longer does.
Then it says that Republicans today back Trump because his policies resemble those of past Republican policies: today many Republicans set aside their concerns about Mr. Trump because of his positions on immigration, trade and taxes. So Republicans of the past had a great vision for America...AND TRUMP'S POLICIES ARE LIKE THEIRS!
But then, it says that the election's not about policy!
To make things even more confusing the Times was adamantly opposed to the election of all those people and their policies. They can't possibly think their policies were wonderful.
The confusion clears up if you realize that the Times is and always has been against any conservative policies. When they say the election's not about policy disagreements, they're lying. They're also lying in what they claim to think of past Republicans. Reagan in particular was seen as virtually a Nazi who might set off a nuclear war back in the day.
Trump actually is different than past Republicans on some policies, particularly immigration. If they had said "We like the lackadaisical attitude toward illegals that past Republicans had", they would be telling the truth. But never mind that point. The whole thing is written for people with a very low IQ.
I’d be more worried about the moral character of Joe Biden and his chief advisor Hunter Biden.
Yep.
I’ll take an outspoken patriot over a loaded diaper any day.
Primaries don’t cost anything, the last Republican they endorsed for President was Eisenhower. The Times is worthless.
Well put! These people are creating their own reality where everything that they believe is projected onto their 'enemies'. That is dangerous flirting with schizophrenia. I am not sure there has ever in history been anything like this.
One thing is for sure: their departure from reality has severely divided the nation (which they 'project' onto their enemies!) to the same oddity of America's 'civil war', which divided cities, towns and even families.
Perilous times❗
I sure hope that people here are not giving them hits by clicking on the article link.
The New York Times should go back to lying about liberal democrats not being demented. Stuff they know about.
Ha ha ha...
They must be crying in their mocha lattes.
