President Joe Biden, facing a political crisis as Democrats question the viability of his campaign and mental fitness, will be put to the test on Thursday when he holds his first solo news conference of the year.
The high-stakes moment is an opportunity for Biden to change the narrative after his poor debate performance triggered a drumbeat of concerns in his own party that he might be too weakened to win against Donald Trump this November.
But any stumbles in the unscripted setting could add fuel to the fire, despite Biden's repeated attempts to rebuff his critics and his insistence that he is staying in the race.
Many Democrats have said they need to see Biden clearly answer questions without faltering or losing his train of thought -- what so alarmed them about his debate showing with Trump two weeks ago.
The news conference will come after Biden concludes hosting a NATO summit in Washington.
Biden kicked off that off with a strong speech on the strength of the alliance, which is marking its 75th anniversary, and an announcement of new air defense capabilities for Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

But there are now nine House Democrats and one Democratic senator who have called on Biden to resign. Privately, many have expressed concern about the possibility of not only losing the presidency but also the House and Senate if Biden remains atop of the ticket.

President Joe Biden’s campaign has already suffered a major slowdown in donations and officials are bracing for a seismic fundraising hit, with fallout from a debate nearly two weeks ago taking a sizable toll on operations, according to four sources close to the re-election effort.
“It’s already disastrous,” one of the sources close to Biden’s re-election said of fundraising. “The money has absolutely shut off” to the Biden campaign, another source close to Biden’s re-election said. Debate rebound? You can’t put the toothpaste back into the tube. Biden’s interview with Stephy was the final nail in the coffin. Biden has daily screwups.
Given the sudden MSM epiphany and the reaction of Dem donors, I expect a blood in the waters moment. A hostile, angry press corps, the tool of the Dems, will attack Biden in an all out effort to drive him from office. They want to provide the pretext for more Dems to come out calling for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race. Critical mass is approaching as time is running out.
The questions will be prearranged and the answers will be scripted and on cue cards
If Biden is re-elected, by the time his next term ends he will have been dead for five years.
Did you hear Biden’s comment about how energetic his crowds of supporters are?
Could he really not know about the millions of Trump supporters that have come to Trump rallies? Compared to the dozens who show up at his? Often there are more media than supporters, in tiny venues...

I would have expected it to be scheduled right in the middle of Biden's work day - 1400 or so - for maximum performance.
They're taking a risk...
Biden is delusional and insulated. His advisers aka handlers, have created a world where Biden is a beloved figure whose policies have been wildly successful and popular.
IF it is not live, how do we know it is unscripted? How do we know that the questions and answers have not already been exchanged?
This is a mistake by the Biden handlers. He was basically on a “HE’S STAYING” roll that this will most likely disrupt.
If he would only s-l-o-w d-o-w-n, I think that he could avoid most of his gaffes.
*I do genuinely believe that he is indeed senile, or suffering from dementia or Parkinson's, etc., and should be removed from office via the 25th Amendment - but I'm speaking ONLY about the perception here.
Instead, he actually speeds up - probably in an attempt to appear more "with it" - which then paradoxically triggers his gaffes.
Like a man with an I.Q. of 95 trying to be perceived as being a man with an I.Q. of 145, using three-dollar words when a simple one would suffice - and garbling them - repeating a Latin aphorism, with a horrible pronunciation - or misquoting a famous statesman, to hilarious effect.

Biden has trouble saying Ukraine and it sometimes comes out as Uranium or Urbytyfygtbabble.
Has anyone noticed the media keeps identifying these “comeback” opportunities, but never discuss the downside - that further exposure cements the dodderer in chief’s (DIC - heh) reputation as a semi-vegetative idiot parading around in his wrinkled birthday suit?
White House Press... “Did you have a good summit Mr. President?”... “You did”... “Awesome. We’ll see you at the next news conference.”
