United Airlines Boeing flight lands in Denver after losing a wheel in Los Angeles
CBS ^ | 7/8/24 | Austin Erblat

Posted on 07/08/2024 3:44:31 PM PDT by DallasBiff

Officials at Denver International Airport said United Flight 1001 -- a Boeing 757-200 -- landed at DIA just before 11 a.m. after a wheel on the rear landing gear fell off the plane upon takeoff at LAX. No injuries were reported among the 174 passengers or seven crewmembers.

United says an investigation is now ongoing to determine what caused the wheel to fall off. The wheel has since been recovered in Los Angeles.

Allen Stubblefield was traveling from southern California to Iowa with a connecting flight in Denver. He flies for work often and has never been part of an emergency landing. He said the takeoff felt completely normal but bout halfway through the flight, the pilot got on the PA to say they'd be doing an emergency landing into Denver.

You are so right. Mr. GG2 worked on the line at Boeing in Everett for years and when they are delivered they are beautiful. The airlines maintenance has gone to shite.

Sometimes it’s lefty tighty reverse threads.

Old Chrysler vehicles and Rolls-Royce/Bentley had/have left-handed threads on the lug nuts.

Something is going on at Boeing and, possibly UAL

I retired from UAL in March of 2000, at age 60 and, having logged over 20,000 hours of flight time. Most, at UAL and USAF and almost all in Boeing Airplanes.
B-727, 737,747-400, 757, 767, 777. B-52G. Two Douglas Airplanes, DC-8 and DC-10.
Other than a few minor emergencies, the time was routine and that is what one would hope for. My flight career spanned 1961 to 2007. I owned a PA-23, Piper Aztec for 10 years.
Now, weather, snow, icing, slick runways, crosswinds, windshear...etc. (Don’t forget ornery flight attendants.) were all a small price to pay for a beautiful career.
The most dangerous part of all my flights was driving to the airport. (Grin)

Are we really surprised that an airplane had its wheels stripped in LA?

My first guess would be that maintenance didn't tighten down the lug nuts to specification, or maybe left off one of the lugnuts.

Once again, poor airline maintenance is being attributed to the premier American aircraft manufacturer.

Who benefits?

Airbus? China?

What does this stupid “wheel” stuff have to do with skin color?

The answer to that, as I’m sure you’re aware, is very complex, which is no doubt why you asked the question. On the other hand, when employment policies are established for the purpose of placating those who demand that hiring decisions be based primarily on quotas to ensure racial diversity, equity, and inclusion no one should be surprised when it becomes evident that public safety is being compromised.

You are correct. Some companies much to their dismay are finding that out.
