A man in California spent more than $400 dollars at Trader Joe’s to feed his six children for a week and a half, as Americans struggle to survive in President Joe Biden’s (D) economy.

The father shared a video online that showed a receipt from the store in Westlake Village in Los Angeles County, Fox Business reported Saturday.

“Here’s what it takes to feed six kids in about a week and a half,” the man said in the video. The camera then pans down to show the bottom of the receipt which says the total bill was $444.38:

I watch the ads for chicken thighs at around 99 cents/pound.

BUT the big trays-—cook in crockpot——freeze some for later.

THE BEST APPLIANCE ANY KITCHEN CAN HAVE IS A 6-8 QUART CROCKPOT...OLD FASHIONED CROCKPOT.

NOT THE “INSTANT POT”.

Still that is for 8 people. That comes out to $5.55 per person per day to feed, pretty cheap I think.

Trader Joes owns Aldi. Division of Aldi (either Aldi Nord or Aldi Sud, in the Euro description).

Branding of products, in house ones, are different for Trader Joes and Aldi.

Trader Joes is supposedly upscale (pre-prepared foods, heat and eat) and deli items.

Will have to look and see if he showed the whole bill line by line. That would be telling, since people do not seem to know how to 1) cook from scratch, simple meals, nutritional and 2.)how to stretch the foods for use in other meals or as sides. One sees this in the regular commercial grocery stores as well— really driving their deli prep stuff. Publix kind of pioneered this years ago.

This cost me $105 today:

Small container of blueberries
Small container of heaven cream
2 packages of butter
Bag of red potatoes
3 Jalapenos
1 cucumber
1 tomato
1 watermelon
3 pears
2 bags of salad mix
1 bag of bagel thins
1 package of turkey meat
1 container of Simply lemonade
1 container of coffee
1 box of chip bags
1 box of crackers

This was the supplemental shopping. My husband usually spends at least $200 a week for a family of 4 on the staples like milk, meat, flour, sugar, bananas, etc.

We eat out once a week, otherwise it’s all home cooking.

The cost of butter went from $2 to $4.50. The cost of blueberries went from $3 to $9. Bacon doubled. This is just the beginning...

Country people, like farming people know what you are speaking about. Meal servings, planned for calories and nutritional value. Pasta is our friend, potatoes crucial and really important are canned goods. Not all fresh frozen like this guy clearly buys.

Keep on hand dry milk for reconstitution with water— gives as much or more in calcium than jug milk. Eggs— eggs can be put into all sorts of meals, boiled, fried, mixed in vegetable/meat casseroles to up the protein content.

Simple foods with minor cooking skills required. And every now and then some grocery loss leads real meat cuts at substantial discounts— you have to make a career about knowing when they show up.

And one more thing- have a freezer for bulk purchase protein buys.

Thanks DesertRhino!

Publix too, We have Krogers and Walmart, just got a small Aldis, and the price is only a few cents difference, too much prepared frozen, and No coupons. I’m not paid to bag my purchase, That is built into their prices and, wages.

Right. When a clerk tells me I can use the self checkout, I just say, “Not my job.”

Yeah, my sister lives right near there and I’ve been to all the Trader Joes there in that area. Not as liberal as I expected but that was 5-7 years ago last time I was there.

Dollar Tree raised their prices because they found out the majority of their new customers have a higher income. So, inflation drove higher-income shoppers to look for deals at Dollar Tree, and then Dollar Tree raised its prices because higher-income people started shopping there.

I shopped there for many years. Even when their items sold for $1, I found better deals on sale at the local supermarkets. But, Dollar Tree is still lower-priced than most other convenience stores, if I need something quickly.

I remember going to Smart and Final out there. Great deals for cheap considering it was California. Heck I remember getting bags of produce for $1 which was way cheaper than Florida at that time.

“Keep on hand dry milk for reconstitution with water”.

That’s a very good one. Easy to overlook that!
And you know, when we ate that way, we were healthier.

Six children is a big, beautiful family. But, many big families look for ways to cut their grocery bills, even in these hard times. A pound of pasta at TJ’s is 99 cents.
