Free USPS Informed Delivery Service
United States Postal Service ^ | 7/7/2024 | USPS

Posted on 07/07/2024 6:44:47 AM PDT by econjack

Informed Delivery is an existing free service provided by the USPS. If you go to their home page, you can see the service mentioned near the middle-right side of the page. After you create an account, each morning you are sent an email that tells you how many pieces of mail you will receive that day, including packages. It then shows photos of the pieces to be delivered. It does not provide Sunday service.

This service is not new. It's been around since 2017, but I was unaware of it. It could be especially useful for people who often have misdirected mail or "porch pirate" problems.

It shows exactly how much you are tracked. They do it anyhow.

Can actually read inside some envelopes

I’ve been using this for years. It’s great, but also reminds me that I am not the only one being “informed” of what mail and packages I am receiving (and sending).

Expecting a check in the mail, showed up on the computer but not in the mailbox, went to PO, they do not like this service, they wish they could stop it and they CAN’T help you if it is lost, nor did it seem like they wanted to try.

I’ve used it for several years. It is interesting whne you get the email showing what will be delivered that day. It usually is right, but some times a letter will show up several days after the email. It makes me wonder where the letter has been?

So much for tossing that jury summons in the trash.

It’s only useful if you read your email. ;)

No it doesn’t. I mean really how the hell else are they supposed to get mail to you? That’s not tracking, that’s WORKING.

Sorry - we have absolutely no reason to trust the USPS. Delivery was just “OK” previously but since COVID - forget it. We can expect our mail delivery anywhere from 8 am to 8 pm. If I have mail to go out, I take it up to the mailbox at the street early only to find that yep - mail is already in the box. Sometimes it belongs to me and sometimes it belongs to a neighbor.

A regular USPS mail truck can be used, sometimes a white panel truck - no one is ever in a USPS uniform. I sometimes see a vehicle drive around and around - up one street, down the other and then repeats it...new drivers? I guess.

All we hear is there is a problem in a processing center and US Senator Ossoff is working HARD to get the problem taken care of. People have been getting mail that was sent to them last December.

Does it show what is being delivered to the mailbox or what is addressed to you? I still get envelopes from Planned Parenthood or Elizabeth Warren addressed to the previous owner, and I moved in here 10 years ago.

A real service would be allowing you to tell the USPS to trash the junk mail. They already got paid a reduced rate from the advertiser, so who cares?

I’ve used this for years now and have had all the issues mentioned. A few years ago, after we sold our house, we used a friends address for mail. I started receiving mail notifications for anyone registered for mail at that house. I didn’t like seeing friends mail notifications, felt like I was spying on them. I still use it now that we are remote living in AK-we only have a PO with no delivery. Cuts down on the trips.

“It makes me wonder where the letter has been?”

More than likely delivered to the wrong mailbox and whoever received it was kind enough to send it back to usps.

There are over 300 homes in my community.....the builder in his infinite wisdom gave homes on the other side the exact same house number.....how unbelievably stupid was that?

Maybe this service will help with my mail ending up 4 streets away.

If there was ever a service provided by the fedgov that needed to be privatized its the mail......amtrak would be a close 2nd

As a letter carrier, this is a good service with faults.
Letters are sorted by machine and put in trays. They are then sent to a post office where the truck driver scans as delivered.
That doesn’t mean they are at the right post office or even the right route. Everyday I have letters for some other place, other routes, which are put into cells, to be hand sorted and sent to where they are supposed to go. If a post office is busy, and there are not enough clerks, this could take a while as they are busy with customers. I’ve seen letters stay in the cells for a few days until someone gets to it. But meanwhile, the post office thinks you’re getting it. We do letter scans at the box also as a sampling. A lot can happen between the plant and delivery to you, but the technology they have right now is pretty good.

Working means that the information is gone within a week.

Tracking means its there forever.

It is gone. Nobody wants to keep all that crap. It’s completely meaningless anyway.

It’s not tracking.

"Does it show what is being delivered to the mailbox or what is addressed to you? I still get envelopes from Planned Parenthood or Elizabeth Warren addressed to the previous owner, and I moved in here 10 years ago."

Without pretending to know, I'm guessing that the name(s) on the envelope are irrelevant and only the address information is used. I'd also guess that the information is collected during during the high-speed sorting process, perhaps a the closest distribution center, perhaps at the local post office.

Been using Informed Delivery for years. I find it generally useful and generally accurate. Not perfect, but pretty good.

I'm also skeptical of the USPS, in general, but because gov't hands are involved, at least peripherally. Never doubt the intent of many of these 'civil servants' to mess with your privacy and - more than every - elections.

I’ve used this service for several years. It’s also handy when your mail disappears (happens frequently where I live) as it makes reporting it easier to do. I highly recommend it.
