Commentary: Presidential Candidates Shouldn’t Have Health Secrets
Channel News Asia ^ | FD Flam | 06 Jul 2024

A nonpartisan panel of doctors should assess every White House hopeful - and disclose the results to the public, says FD Flam for Bloomberg Opinion.

The presidential debate last week revealed an embarrassing fact about the American political system: We are all low-information voters. No matter how diligently any of us might keep up with the news, we don’t have access to basic data on the physical, cognitive and mental health of the people we’re electing to lead us.

That could change if all presidential candidates were required to undergo an exam by an independent panel of physicians and reveal the results to voters.

Biden’s confused, sometimes incoherent performance last week unleashed a flurry of speculation on social and mainstream media. Aides, associates and foreign leaders who’ve had close contact told reporters that alarming lapses had become more frequent over the last two years - and that on recent trips to Europe there were moments of “sharpness ... mixed with occasional blank-stared confusion.”

President Franklin Roosevelt could not even stand upright without support. His legs were paralyzed from polio.

Most Americans NEVER KNEW IT though he was elected FOUR times to the office of President.

The press ALWAYS knew it but kept it a secret.

President John F. Kennedy wore a back brace constantly. When he arrived at the hospital after being shot, they had to cut the brace off his body.

Good grief....everyone knew about Roosevelt's polio and Kennedy's brace was a typical fabric and steel brace.....just like millions sold around the world....and just like mine.

Physical disabilities are totally separate from alzheimers and dementia.

Why not cognitive tests for anyone running for federal office? Look at the members of Congress who are also cognitively impaired.

there ‘used to be’ a thing in the Air Force that determined if you were qualified to be around certain items of U.S.A.F. inventory.

It was very touchy, and the slightest questionable incident re-assigned you to a ‘cook’s aide’ until the question was resolved, one way or the other.
I agree, that ALL OF OUR LEADERS, since any one of them makes a decision about the security of the nation, and therefore, ME,undergo a health examination, worthy of their status.

I agree. They should also have a test every two years.

My only problem with this is that the government is corrupt and they have corrupted our medical field.

I agree, but i add then anyone voting should have to test too and results made public. It would give the public some insight into people voting for and supporting potato head presidents, and maybe help weed out potato head congress etc.

“ A nonpartisan panel of doctors should assess every White House hopeful.”

_______________

The only way that could happen is for each candidate to be presented unrecognizable - impossible.

Bingo, there is nothing and no one in this country that is "bipartisan". Its just another elution, just another panel of "experts".

It would have the same bipartisan experts we have from the former economic and intelligence communities.

I think the resolution would be stop protecting a propaganda media. THey can print anything without recourse. A few good healthy lawsuits and they would either be out of business or might try to just state the facts. The paper Faye used to work for “inky” here in philly actually recommended that Trump quit the race because he lies. Did they fact check anything pant load Bidet has said. No.
