Man dies after firework explodes on his head

A man died after a firework exploded on his head during a Fourth of July block party, South Carolina officials said.

Charleston-area deputies were called to a neighborhood at about 10:30 p.m. and found a man lying in a road. He died at the scene, the Dorchester County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices wrote in news releases.

The coroner’s office identified the man as 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew. He is from Summerville, a roughly 25-mile drive northwest from Charleston.

McGrew was attending a block party on his street when he “ignited a large firework device” and put the lit firework on his head, possibly to show off, according to the coroner and details the man’s wife shared with deputies.

“She was trying to tell Allen not to do that when the firework went off and she observed Allen collapse,” deputies wrote in an incident report.

The explosion left McGrew with “massive head injuries,” according to the coroner’s office.

The man’s death, which the sheriff’s office called “accidental,” remained under investigation as of July 5.

DARWIN WINNER!

41 and married, probably had kids.

Anyhow, imagine this is the last video of dad that everyone will remember his legacy by.

Man filmed dancing just moments before he blew his head up (Twitter, not graphic)

Firecrackers, especially the one-inch ones, were fairly harmless. But M-80s are setious pyrotechnics.

Lol, those M80s are the real deal. Set one off in our backyard, it created a bald spot in the lawn of about 2 feet in diameter. My mom was not pleased.

My old roommate was 6’4” and 250 and he held onto one of those shells while another buddy lit it. Since it had a foot long fuse, he was going to have another friend light it while he tossed it towards the river. I remember the guy lighting the fuse only to have it instantly ignite the shell in his hand. He had a pretty bad burn and blister but he was lucky it didn’t take his hand off. He drank some more and passed out but the next day he was miserable.

At least I no longer have to try that myself. I think I can safely scratch it off my bucket list.

I still have an iron man daylight hike in August across Death Valley with no food, water and cordless bungee jumping to go. If I live long enough.

Read a book when I was young that was ostensibly written by a former SS Officer. In it, he wrote of SS Officer cadets setting off concussion grenades balanced on the steel army helmet they were wearing. He claimed that if you did it right, the helmet would reflect the force of the blast and, while your bell was rung, you suffered no serious injury.

Of course, I have also read, more recently, that the author was a BS artist.
