A man died after a firework exploded on his head during a Fourth of July block party, South Carolina officials said.
Charleston-area deputies were called to a neighborhood at about 10:30 p.m. and found a man lying in a road. He died at the scene, the Dorchester County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices wrote in news releases.
The coroner’s office identified the man as 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew. He is from Summerville, a roughly 25-mile drive northwest from Charleston.
McGrew was attending a block party on his street when he “ignited a large firework device” and put the lit firework on his head, possibly to show off, according to the coroner and details the man’s wife shared with deputies.
“She was trying to tell Allen not to do that when the firework went off and she observed Allen collapse,” deputies wrote in an incident report.
The explosion left McGrew with “massive head injuries,” according to the coroner’s office.
The man’s death, which the sheriff’s office called “accidental,” remained under investigation as of July 5.
Gallows humor, and a poor application of free will.
Lol!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤭
I’m sorry, but that’s really really funny.
Because he was dressed as Uncle Sam, he could very easily have been a Trump voter.
I have to know......did someone hold his beer?
That was my first “reaction” as well. But I don’t think the kick from a mortar firing would be enough to kill somebody. They make hand held mortars. I guess size matters. But it probably fell off of his head and then he got a mortar to the face/head.
Some 40-something guy in my suburb (where fireworks are banned) was with a bunch of people in a parking lot setting off fireworks. He got a mortar to the head (which he had set off) and died.
Apparently, Florida Man has (had) a brother in South Carolina.
Funniest thing I’ve seen all week.
Sounds like what happened near me a few months ago. Some guy was shooting off fireworks in the middle of the night near a reservoir behind my house with a group of other Mensa candidates and at least partially decapitated himself.
Happens every year.
Thank you for expressing your opinion.
Don’t put fireworks on your head. Don’t stick a live 120VAC line in your mouth. Don’t go swimming in a fumarole.
Seriously.
Those are stupid things to do.
And stupidity should hurt.
And you, RiF, apparently don’t “get” dark humor. That’s OK ... it’s not for everybody. Those of us who do “get” dark humor aren’t going to give it up to satisfy your sensitive feelings.
Have a nice day.
And of course it was alcohol related
He let those hellcat rockets 🧨 go to his head
OMG - I didn’t realize the guy in my area ALSO set it off on top of his head. And with his kids watching. I bet there are videos on Tik-Tok that these people are trying to recreate. I hope it wasn’t one of his kids that told him about it. “Hey dad.....”

A 45-year-old Bothell [Washington State] man died Friday morning in a fireworks accident in a Redmond parking lot.
It happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 11500 block of Avondale Road.
The man was lighting off fireworks with his family, including young children, when he tried to launch a mortar-style firework from the top of his head.
When officers arrived, the man was unconscious and not breathing. Officers performed CPR until medics with Redmond Fire arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Great vid, but there is no way the explosions were 150000 FPS.
I believe the rules for being a Darwin Winner is that the person has no offspring.
Before we hand out the much desired Darwin Award, further investigation is needed.
Not sure the nature of your objection.
If you think they’re not using one or more “Phantom” brand cameras capable of six or seven digit FPS, take it up with them. I have no reason to believe they’re not being honest.
I saw a new clip that said he’s been drinking since 6pm
Hours and hours later - he finally gave up drinking
You are right, 150000 frames/second.
Hol’ ma beer.
