The head of the Yemeni Ansarallah terrorist organization, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, boasted in a national address on Thursday that his jihadists had turned American aircraft carriers into “obsolete weapons.”
Houthi’s group, which controls the Yemeni capital of Sana’a and received significant backing from state sponsor of terror Iran, declared war on Israel in October in support of fellow jihadist terrorists Hamas. The Houthis’, as they are commonly known, main contribution to terrorism in the Middle East has been a campaign against commercial shipping in the Red Sea in which they use drones, missiles, and other often rudimentary weapons to attack random civilian vessels in the region. The campaign has resulted in skyrocketing shipping fees and the collapse of toll revenue at the Suez Canal in Egypt as many companies choose to redirect ships around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa.

All Russia has to do is give Houthis hypersonic missiles. Seems fair enough, since the US gives Ukraine missiles to strike Russian territory. And since the US says they are not responsible for what Ukraine does with our missiles, surly Russia is not responsible for what Yemen does with their missiles either. There is no defense against hypersonic missiles.
In the Ukraine and the Gaza wars military observers have noted that only a tiny sample of modern technological, now outdated weaponry, has been deployed. The real danger is that the Pentagon is run by Battleship Admirals and Calvary Generals who are supported by defense industry special interests and the politicos that have been bought. It will be brave, young irreplaceable people who will die. Would you really want someone you cared deeply about on a naval surface combatant, a land armored vehicle or a helicopter if there was a real 21st century world war between superpowers? I’d hope those strategies are under review and redevelopment. I agree that the people who survive to reach the top in militaries and governments are usually those who have made the right alliances rather than those who are best suited to the job. Thus, it is and always has been. The only reason they change the way they think, and act, is for their personal survival in their jobs. If the average general today thinks about the lives of his men, it’s only because losing them might affect his position. (I base this assessment on the number of retired asshole ship captains, army colonels and majors I’ve worked for.) The fact we have in government an admiral who is a man made up to look like a particularly ugly woman sends shivers down my spine. Even if “it” is only running the nation’s medical establishment. What “it” conveys to me is how far off the rails our leadership has gone.
IMO the neon-cons are enabling them to continue warring.
and the hate America contingent while self acclaiming to be opposed to war are like fish on a hook, denigrating our military and in essence becoming mouthpieces for the neo cons.
Aircraft carriers have been “obsolete” already for 20 years or more.
But what do you mean by “obsolete”?
A tank can easily over run an infantry soldier so infantry is obsolete?
A tank can easily be taken out by an air craft with ground attack capabilities so tanks are obsolete?
Aircraft really suck at controlling territory, only boots can do that.
Its like a giant game of rock, paper, scissors and from time to time someone comes up with something that “beats everything” at least for awhile until some kid comes up with something else.
They havent been the king for a good while.
What bothers me most about these discussions are those that claim that aircraft carriers still serve a purpose as far as deterrence. Those people are idiots or preprogramming you for what they have planned.
If I did intend to get into a war with you then an aircraft carrier has enough power that Im going to hit it in the first waves of attacks if I can reach it.

No you havent seen submersible air superiority drone carriers and no one has sunk an American carrier. The key word is YET.
The fact that Japan and Germany were defeated in the manner they were to a significant degree was because of their belief in the power of the obsolete battleship. It was at that time still a matter of YET.
China is believed to be recently weaponizing space and Russia is said to have been doing so for a good while. No surface vessel, not even those platforms capable of anti-satellite weaponry, are going to be able to overcome the advantage of that high ground.
Their only purpose at the front of a conflict is to get killed and force us into full blown conflict.
The Navy could stop the shipping attacks with the right ROEs.

I don’t agree.

Not true. Aricraft carriers are as the name implies - floating arsenals of attack aircraft with their own airstrip. They have in most recent times delivered missile fire power from those aircraft, not only in “grond support” but also on targets where we had no ground operation. With aircraft carriers we supplement lacks of ground airbases, and I repeat, they have the arms & means to defend themselves very well, including anti-missile abilities.
That said, they do need to cintinue to update their abilities.
