The Memo: Democratic fears rise as Trump’s chances soar after debate, Supreme Court ruling
The Hill ^ | 7/02/24 | Niall Stanage

Former President Trump’s chances of winning back the White House have soared in recent days — pitching Democrats into a stew of panic and despair.

A week ago Democrats clung to several hopes, only to see each of them dashed in a period shorter than 90 hours.

They believed President Biden could use an early first debate to prove his vigor and acuity. They thought the debate would focus voters’ minds on the perils of a potential second Trump presidency. And they hoped Trump might find himself on trial for Jan. 6-related offenses before November.

None of it happened.

Biden’s dismal performance at Thursday’s debate was the first earthquake. The aftershocks are still being felt, with the party in turmoil over the question of whether he should go forward as the nominee.

Then, on Monday, the Supreme Court carved out a sizable swath of immunity for Trump from any criminal prosecution.

The court did acknowledge that Trump, or any president, could still be prosecuted for “unofficial” acts. But it remanded the question of which of Trump’s contentious acts were official and unofficial back to lower courts. Arguments over that question will almost certainly push any actual trial past November’s election — if it ever happens.

“The Supreme Court decision is a much more powerful one than some had expected it to be,” Trump crowed on social media.

“They just handed Donald Trump the keys to a dictatorship,” the Biden campaign’s principal deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks told reporters on a conference call.

Biden spoke from the White House about the Supreme Court decision on Monday evening.

He lamented that it left “virtually no limits on what a president can do” and admitted that it is now “highly, highly unlikely” that Trump will face a Jan. 6-related trial before November’s election.

Then, on Monday, the Supreme Court carved out a sizable swath of immunity for Trump from any criminal prosecution.

On Monday, SCOTUS reaffirmed that the President - ANY President - has complete immunity for core acts under his defined role (as identified in the constitution), and presumptive immunity for OFFICIAL acts. Unofficial acts are not immune.

They always want to pretend this hasn't been the standard forever.

the supreme court ruling was a nothing burger and changed NOTHING except that the cases against Trump wont be solved before the election.

Before yesterday, there was NOTHING that would have prevented ANY President EVER of pardoning themselves and everyone associated with the administration for any and all crimes they may or may not have committed before leaving office.

Which is even MORE powerful than what the supreme court said yesterday, because they could pardon themselves even for personal behavior as long as it was a pardonable crime (federal)

Now is the time for all GOPers to start bringing indictments against all RAT politicians, their families, friends and associates. If they haven’t committed any serious crimes, they should have. Just charge them with perjury and “contempt of Congress.”

None of this really matters.

What matters is the latest horse race polling. Who will you vote for? Not who won the debate. Not who is too old. Not who is senile.

Who will you vote for?

We have yet to see a good quality poll post debate on this matter.

As for prospects, early voting starts September. Late September so it is about 3 months out. Not 5. It’s actually a long time.

They are so terrified any . . . not almost any . . . any measure is conceivable on Their part.

And let’s not get confused. “Their” is as much Republicans of the GOPe filth variety as Democrats.

Nope. Just pick on one or 2 that even the public gets. The congresswoman that married her brother. The butthead that pulled the fire alarm. One or 2 and they’ll get the message.

ANYTHING can happen in 4 months.

Do not rejoice yet.

Unlike Republicans, Democrats NEVER stop fighting and planning.

Don’t mention Biden. Push their button. Make them panic even more. Throw gasoline on their fire.

Remember when Thomas Eagleton was found to have received electroshock treatments? After McGovern ‘reassuradly’ stood by him the GOP response was this: “I wouldn’t want to vote for someone who was once hooked up to jumper cables”.

That would require testicles. My neutered dog has more testicular fortitude than 99% of the GOP.

We need to understand, strong conservative governors and AGs are the key. They exist and live outside the Beltway. They actual represent us. They have been more successful than any GOP Congresscritter or Senate slug and fighting for conservatives.

The deep state, Biden’s obvious dementia and bogus lawfare against Trump and his staff and supporters is being exposed for all to see.

Bannon is in jail for the exact thing Merrick Garland did and is exempting himself from.

This means they are pressuring Merchan to sentence Trump to the maximum time in prison for each 34 counts. Then make some rule where each count can only be appealed while serving time. And he will probably send him to SuperMax Florence because he is such a threat to democracy.
