John Deere is sparking outrage by laying off American workers and moving more of its agricultural equipment manufacturing to Mexico.
Since October 2023, more than 1,000 John Deere workers have either been laid off or pushed into an early retirement across several plants in Iowa and Illinois.
In many instances, production that these US workers were responsible for has been shifted to new locations in Mexico. The company was founded 187 years ago.
More layoffs are expected later this year - despite John Deere raking in over $10 billion in profit in 2023 while also paying CEO John May $26.7 million in total compensation.
A longtime John Deere worker at the Harvester Works plant in East Moline, Illinois, told The Guardian it comes down to one thing: Greed.
'We get wind of more layoffs daily, it seems, and it's causing uncertainty all over,' said the worker, who stayed anonymous for fear of retaliation.
'The only reason for Deere to do this is greed.'

“The $26 million not only represents a year’s pay but a remaining lifetime’s worth of income risk.”
Of course they must be insulated from a lifetime of risk. The factory workers building tractors, they can just go to the next tractor factory down the road and compete as a brand new employee against green card immigrants.
Nobody much worries about their lifetime’s worth of risk.
One wonders how many elite out of touch posters there are on FR? Seems like a lot to me. Most seem to easily relate to the “managerial” class view of the world.
Ĵust sayin’. I wouldn’t personally, just that there are defensible reasons. Traitors are concentrated in D.C.
Without Reagan’s tariffs we wouldn’t have Harley Davidson today.
No, we actually DID impose a constitution on Japan. MacArthur was heavily involved and we did indeed dictate most provisions of it.
I’m with you...
By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it. I have never known much good done by those who affected to trade for the public good.Boy we could use some of that common sense today.
And you know, nothing at all wrong with the managerial class in my mind. As long as they don’t forget they are AMERICANS first, and that they don’t always act like the workers are pond scum and basically communist.
It gets old to see them wax reverently how the CEOs are nearly godlike and pure, and the mere workers are un-American trash who should be beaten weekly by Pinkertons! One hell of a lot of the workers are Trump voters and good Americans who send sons to war and are fine neighbors.
Put it under the heading of helping them recover and for the self protection of America as well.
Backwards.... the CEO and executive class needs help to recover and America needs protection from them. Look at the loyalty they have for China, Mexico etc. They deserve no better loyalty from American consumers.
They will build in Mexico and then flood the TV and magazines with those goofy “heartland America” type commercials, talk about their heritage etc. It won’t be commercials filled with Mexicanos on the assembly line taking a taco break. All the commercials will be set in Iowa and Illinois.
Screw em... they are part of what has destroyed America in the last two decades. Hope they go the way of Bid Light and Tractor Supply.

I’m starting to think maybe I should have voted for Ross Perot.
Whatever. The best economy the world has ever seen is the voluntary cooperation between buyers and sellers in the marketplace free from government interference.
In the free market’s open competition, an inferior or “bad” business will go under if enough people’s interest goes elsewhere.
The only exception is where there are valid, not illusory, military considerations with a threating nation.
Freedom isn’t perfect but it is way ahead of whatever’s in second place.
