Muted microphones and no live studio audience were among the debate guidelines.
The nation watched as President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump squared up Thursday evening in the first presidential debate of the 2024 general election.
While this debate wasn't the first time the two candidates contended over issues ranging from immigration and the economy to abortion access -- this presidential debate saw the two candidates forced to follow the rules.
Ahead of the debate, held in a studio at CNN's Atlanta headquarters, both campaigns agreed to a set of guidelines established by CNN, which included muted microphones, no live studio audience and restricting the candidates from consulting with their teams during commercial breaks.
Biden-Trump presidential debate live updates: High-stakes argument ends While the microphone muting kept the cross-fire between the candidates orderly, the debate's strict time guidelines seemingly made for less pushback from the event's moderators, CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
The debate saw Biden and Trump continuously calling each other a "liar," but with little-to-no live fact-checking by the moderators.
"This debate is a master-class in what's wrong with our media-saturated, horse-race obsessed politics," Robert. E Kelly, a professor of political science, wrote on X Thursday.
"Trump is just lying and making stuff up but he says it 'vigorously' and doesn't get fact-checked. Therefore he's winning," Kelly wrote, adding, "We'll spend the next month debating Biden's age rather than Trump's staggering incompetence."
Another viewer suggested the debate format should feature a "buzzer" that would go off every time the candidates said a false statement.
"We need a buzzer to go off every time a false statement is made by a candidate," Amee Vanderpool, a political writer, wrote on X.
"Until then any debate in this format, with moderators who refuse to fact check statements

Exactly!
I was completely surprised that the moderators behaved.
The term “fact checking” is fairly new and was designed to give legitimacy to spin and propaganda. There is very little fact in today’s fact checking.

The one rule that got rejected was having a stand-in for Biden.
Why, at the end, did Dana Bash keep pressing President Trump on if he would abide by the election results, regardless of the democrat fraud (I added the last part)? She should have asked Joe the same question, but alas... I thought President Trump handled it well.
If libs were car engine distributors I’d say they were 180° out.

When the left takes control of anything it tends to backfire on them.Freedom and Common Sense won that debate. You can never unsee how abused Biden is by the Democrats but they have no options so they will continue to abuse him.I can only imagine what phantom drug cocktails they are experimenting with on him.Trump is actually saving Biden by rescuing him from Jill and the snake pit.
What do you expect..he is guilty of imaginary felonies...just because
It clearly didn’t work. It was set by the Biden team to cover up his senility. He was totally exposed.
As a procedure for informing the audience, it worked quite well. It even imposed some needed restraint on the moderators.
Backfire? They got Obamacare..men playing women sports..gay “marriage”..they drag their opponent through...open borders..multiple wars..BIDEN.
No one on the has went to jail..in fact all have enriched themselves greatly.
I agree normal working people are all getting screwed but the corrupt, greedy, American hating perverts and freaks are mostly getting EVERYTHING they want.

Apparently they prepared him to debate as a policy wonk, hence all the fast talking and conflating of topics. His mind was given too much far beyond what he could handle.
(The format was ‘fine’ insofar as we got a measure of these men.)
These actually aren’t politically smart people.
Slick Willie playing the saxophone on a late night show, good politics for their side. Obama running on ‘hope,’ good politics. Bill Clinton warning his wifes campaign, “don’t forget about the working class” good and smart politics. There’s never been a moment Biden was a good national politician and 2020 and what went on was so crazy it is a complete outlier.
And here’s the other big thing. There’s no vision for a Biden second term, what he would offer, he can’t admit things are bad, so we can’t even hear his solutions, so its: Jail my political opponents and more of the same (no border, high prices, and more of this stuff with Russia). Complete insanity.
Actually, that was one of the subtle pro-Biden biases that the CNN employees with microphones displayed. The other was alternately addressing Donald Trump as "Mr President" or "Mr Former President". at least they did not address him as "Convicted Felon" ; that would probably be reserved for Chris Wallace if he ever gets another chance to take sides in a debate.
To me, it was the best debate in 40 years. I thoroughly liked the new rules and the fact that Biden insisted on the rules makes them even more delicious. Ha! It backfired on the Biden team who thought it’d screw trump. Ha!
The funniest part was Jill assisting Joe down the three steps at the end of the debate. And when he was at the bottom she says, “oh Joe. You answered every question.” 😂. It was like a mother proud of her six year old.
They should use the format for their own shows. I’m sick of “pundits” shouting over each other.
I thought it worked because it kept Trump from making a screaming fool of himself as he does when there’s a live audience. He actually sounded rational and it seemed that he was listening to the questions and Biden’s non-response.
And it let us all see the extent of Biden’s dementia. Again, it was because he couldn’t scream and make weird faces, as he did in NC just the next day, since there was no audience to appreciate them.
Also, I suspect that for this reason his handlers had used different drugs on him. When he thinks he’s being “energetic,” he’s acting like he’s on some pretty serious stuff…
I keep seeing Trump lied all over, along with burdens message was good but the delivery was off.
Where exactly did President Trump tell a lie ?
It seemed to me that Trump simply corrected the many mischaracterizations off his many statements.
Worked for me.. the endless interruptions in debates are useless. I think Trump did fine with the time and mics off. Biden hung himself.
I hate CNN but the moderators did ok...
Reality here is that the format backfired for CNN.
Biden told lie after lie.
I thought it was good. The expressions on Trump’s face were enough to send messages. I think his people had that planned before the event, because only a couple/few hours afterward, a video was released with Joe yammering, with Trump in the split screen.
I liked that there was no feedback from an audience; it made it easier for Joe to (figuratively) hang himself.
“The debate format was tailored to give Biden an advantage.”
The word, “backfire”, comes to mind.
