At least 1,301 people died during Hajj - Saudi Arabia

At least 1,301 people died during Hajj, Saudi Arabia says, mostly unauthorised pilgrims who walked long distances in intense heat.

This year's pilgrimage took place during a heatwave, with temperatures at times exceeding 50C (122F).

More than three-quarters of those who died did not have official permits to be there and walked under direct sunlight without adequate shelter, the official Saudi news agency SPA said.

Some of those who died were elderly or chronically ill, the agency added.

Health Minister Fahd Al-Jalajel said efforts had been made to raise awareness about the dangers of heat stress and how pilgrims could mitigate this.

Health facilities treated nearly half a million pilgrims, including more than 140,000 who did not have a permit, he said, and some were still in hospital for heat exhaustion.

"May Allah forgive and have mercy on the deceased. Our heartfelt condolences go to their families," he said.

Come on. Gotta admit it’s not worth it. Maybe to them I guess.

IDK—bt methinks that the Haj casualties are entitle to a half-price special: ≤36.

Every Muslim in the world at some point has to make the Hajj.

Saudi Arabians look at non-wealthy foreigners as dirt, fit for slavery. Even worse if they are Shi’ite.

Yes indeed. It's a bit of a let down on the over/under,
but you've got to take what they give you.
There's always next season.

I understand that (m)uslims feel that once in their lifetime they have to go and see the rock. But what I don’t understand is why don’t they pick a season when it isn’t so hot?

“ WHEN IS HAJJ?
The Hajj occurs once a year during the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar year. This year, Hajj will take place this month.

For pilgrims, performing Hajj fulfills a religious obligation, but it’s also a deeply spiritual experience of a lifetime for many. It’s seen as a chance to seek God’s forgiveness for past sins, to grow closer to God and to walk in the footsteps of prophets“.

When I posted a reference to these deaths they were at that time 600, number now has doubled.

Being that it is required of all Muslims to do this at least once in their lifetime and it is seen as a chance to seek God’s forgiveness for past sins, it makes me wonder if some that go have committed grave sins and prior to going on to the next world hope to be forgiven, hence the number of elderly or just any number of big time sinners in the crowd.

Just a thought is all.

Muslims must make the Haj once in their lifetime. It is considered a commandment but, on the other hand, a Muslim who blows him or herself up next to an “Infidel” is considered to have made the Haj. So either way they deserve to die in the Saudi heat.

turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?
