The attackers fired at the religious sites, as well as a police station, across the tinderbox region of Dagestan, a largely Muslim region of Russia that borders Georgia and Azerbaijan.

There were at least three attacks, all of them in the Dagestan region of Russia.

The attacks were committed by Islamic terrorists (though it isn’t yet known if they were associated with the group that carried out the attack on Crocus City Hall in March).

The first attack was at an Eastern Orthodox church in Derbent. A church guard was shot dead and the priest, 66 year old Archpriest Nikolai Kotelnikov, was killed after the terrorists slit his neck. The terrorists set fire to the church and then fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Polo.

The second attack was at a synagogue in Makhachkala. The terrorists attacked worshippers with automatic gunfire and set the synagogue on fire, killing at least one worshipper.

The third attack was also in Makhachkala immediately following the attack at the synagogue. Terrorists fired at people nearby, killing at least six police officers. While it is likely that the six police officers were killed in an attack on a police station, the exact location of said attack has not yet been confirmed.

The (individual) terrorists involved in the Makhachkala attack aren’t the same ones involved in the Derbent as the timing of the two attacks overlapped with each other (though both attacks are still obviously connected).

Although the exact number of attackers is unknown, two have been identified as of the sons of Magomed Omarov, head of the Sergokalinsky district in Dagestan. Both have been confirmed dead.

The death toll is at least 10, all of which have been mentioned in the paragraphs above (2 attackers, 6 police officers, one priest, and one church guard). At least 15 are injured, although it is unknown whether these were terrorists, police officers, or civilians.

The attack is currently ongoing, with terrorists firing at police in both Derbent and Makhachkala. Some terrorists are barricaded in a house in Derbent, but it hasn’t been raided yet.

“crazed followers of Satan”

More likely Neocon-directed, but who knows.

Or maybe Kremlin-directed like the 1999 Russian apartment bombings, but who knows.

In September 1999, a series of explosions hit four apartment blocks in the Russian cities of Buynaksk, Moscow, and Volgodonsk, killing more than 300, injuring more than 1,000, and spreading a wave of fear across the country. The bombings, together with the Invasion of Dagestan, triggered the Second Chechen War. The handling of the crisis by Vladimir Putin, who was prime minister at the time, boosted his popularity greatly and helped him attain the presidency within a few months.

The blasts hit Buynaksk on 4 September and Moscow on 9 and 13 September. On 13 September, State Duma speaker Gennadiy Seleznyov made an announcement in the Duma about receiving a report that another bombing had just happened in the city of Volgodonsk. A bombing did happen in Volgodonsk—but only three days later—on 16 September. Chechen militants were blamed for the bombings, but denied responsibility, along with Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov.

A suspicious device resembling those used in the bombings was found and defused in an apartment block in the Russian city of Ryazan on 22 September. On 23 September, Vladimir Putin praised the vigilance of the inhabitants of Ryazan and ordered the air bombing of Grozny, which marked the beginning of the Second Chechen War. Three FSB agents who had planted the devices at Ryazan were arrested by the local police. The next day, FSB director Nikolay Patrushev announced that the incident in Ryazan had been an anti-terror drill and the device found there contained only sugar, and freed the FSB agents involved.

“... continue to play footsie with the Mullahs of Iran?”

Putin has little choice. He has bad friends and worse enemies.

He is basically presiding over the breakup of his nation’s “Federation”. A further crumbling of the USSR’s empire-by-force.

Hmmmmm, let’s see. What was attacked? Churches and Synagogues? Who, in a predominantly Muslim region would attack these two religions? Could they be from the “religion of Peace”?
