Why should I use my already taxed money to give a tip (some here call it “gift) to someone else tax free? Trump is way off on this one. Smart people will simply reduce the percentage they tip to compensate with the net effect being the status quo.

A conservative wants people to keep more of their own money.

A conservative, to my mind, is delighted whenever anyone can do that.

And just wishes to keep more of their own.

Don’t begrudge anyone their own money.

No, he’s not.

The government needs to cut spending, not tax everything to the air we breathe.

He’s right. Cut out taxes on tips. It disincentivizes good service and only rewards people who lie and are dishonest about the amount of tips they make.

Besides, that money has already been taxed a few times, when the person earned it, and when they bought something with it, and now it’s whenever it changes hands? Howe many times do you think money should be taxed?

Besides, why are you concerned with what others do? If you don’t want to tip, have at it. But don’t penalize others who do.

Just don’t tip at all.

Write on the receipt “Sorry, but I don’t tip people that don’t pay taxes”.

Why should you use your hard earned money to give a tip to the Government?
Why should people who get tips have to pay tax based on a Government estimated tip rate whether they get tipped that amount or not?
Why would anyone ignore the realities of waitress/waiter employment and cheer the Government taking advantage because they can while the Government uses the $ to pay off Ukraine, mandate destruction of American culture and syphon $ for their own pockets.

A tip is meant for service “above and beyond”. So, when you tip a waitress, you think the government treated you above and beyond?
As you stated, that money has already been taxed. Why on earth should any level of government get to tax it again?

No, not everyone is a selfish, entitled jerk.

I understand this point, however.... In a restaurant, we’re supposed to be full of gratitude and cheer, so much so that we’re not calculating how we can minimize what we can give a server, but celebrating their service (if good) with a “tip” (really, their main wage) while having a damn good time. Anything else is what the libs do.

Instead of giving more bucks to waste to the Feds...their tip money is spent locally. Good for everybody.

People should be happy anytime some small portion of our population can escape the grasping greasy hands of our out of control government.

Not everyone.

We have been enjoying tipping MORE because we use it as a recruiting tool.

We always tip in cash so it goes into someone's pocket, not a government database.

Waitstaff are often young and a little lefty until it affects them directly - use it!

Maybe Trump is trying to save some jobs that weren’t as attractive as the french fry cooker getting $20 because of govt mandated minimum wages way beyond market values.

$20 an hour behind a fryer doesn’t look as good as hustling as a waiter/waitress getting to keep the tips ‘legally’ in that scenario.

You should just write on your credit card slop:

“NO TIP FOR YOU!!
I’m cheap and wildly jealous!!
Oh, and I’m smart too!”

If this is the case. I should be able to build a fence for a person.
Charge them for the materials, no profit there, and have them tip me for my labor.

CURRENT IRS TAX RULES:

UP TO $17,000 a year can be given in ‘gift’ to one person before taxes kick in.

THEN-—THE GIVER is responsible for the taxes.

I like it because many places pay almost nothing in wages when employees are tipped.

This is support of the working folks. The US pays all those tax dollars to foreign counties for wars and weapons and global bully tactics.

Time for Americans to benefit from hard work. Keep in mind that servers get tipped well for really good service. If they stink, the tips are low or nonexistent.

Agreed. I’m guessing this bad take is from his own family perspective hiring lots of tipped employees—as opposed to a sop to big donors.

Sitting solidly in the no-income-tax and sales-tax-only camp I think it doesn’t go far enough. Kill all income tax. A sales tax on everything (I would consider only on new items) would do what the progressive tax claims to do and would also capture taxes from those that get income “under the table” like drug dealers and politicians - since they are likely to spend their illegal income. And speaking of illegals, it would capture their spending, too. Set a flat “rebate” amount to cover like the first 10k of spending to quiet down the poor if you must. But no filing taxes. No withholding. Just an extra 15-20% tax at the cash register.

So you are one of THOSE.

We had a restaurant close on Sunday’s because the elderly would always eat there but leave .50 tip on a $20 meal. The wait staff called in sick every Sunday due to the tipping.

It is always your choice to tip - but the can be consequences.
