Trump leaves $500 tip at restaurant in Philadelphia: 'No tax on tips!'

President Donald Trump left a $500 tip at a restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and wrote, “Vote Trump, No Tax on Tip” on the check.

In a video shared to X by Margo Martin, Trump’s deputy director of communications, Trump can be seen writing on a check at Tony and Nick’s Steaks, and saying, “No tax on tips” as people in the background can be heard cheering.

“No tax on tips!” Trump says.

A photo posted to X by Martin shows a group of employees holding up the check signed by Trump, with the words, “Vote Trump. No tax on tip.”

Nicky Lucidonio, who owns the cheesesteak restaurant, Tony and Nick’s Steaks, told Fox Business that it was an “unbelievable” moment and that the former president answered questions and signed “hats” and “everything.”

“It was just unbelievable,” Lucidonio told the outlet. “He was talking to people, you know, they’re asking questions. He’s answering them. He’s signing hats. He signed and everything.”

Lucidonio explained to the outlet that a woman had come into his restaurant on Friday telling him she had a “big order” of roughly 200 sandwiches.

“Wow, 200 cheesesteaks. I said, ‘Great, who’s it for?’ She wanted to help me. She said it’s for some special people,” Lucidonio told the outlet.

During a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this month, Trump promised that if elected president, his administration would eliminate taxes on tips for people who work in service industry-related jobs.

“So, this is the first time I’ve said this. And, for those hotel workers and people that get tips, you’re going to be very happy,” Trump said at the time. “Becaus....

Maybe Trump is trying to save some jobs that weren’t as attractive as the french fry cooker getting $20 because of govt mandated minimum wages way beyond market values.

$20 an hour behind a fryer doesn’t look as good as hustling as a waiter/waitress getting to keep the tips ‘legally’ in that scenario.

Tips are income.

Income is taxed.

Tips should be taxed.

I ate out last night at a popular Mexican restaurant. I wrote the same thing on my receipt.

The young cashier, a very hardworking 13%er, looked puzzled. So I took the time to explain. As I was leaving, I noticed a gleam in her eye and she was showing the receipt to a nearby coworker.

She told me she had not heard about the proposal. We all need to do this when dining out. Watch their faces. You’ll feel like a modern day Paul Revere

“NO TIP FOR YOU!!
I’m cheap and wildly jealous!!
Oh, and I’m smart too!”

I’ve read nothing about anyone’s efforts to deal with this.

I've read about a few, though I can't remember details because I thought/think they were woefully inadequate.

IIRC the tax on tips came about during the Reagan administration? Prior to that point they were not taxed. It was the democrat run congress that forced it through Please correct me if I’m wrongly

If this is the case. I should be able to build a fence for a person.
Charge them for the materials, no profit there, and have them tip me for my labor.

CURRENT IRS TAX RULES:

UP TO $17,000 a year can be given in ‘gift’ to one person before taxes kick in.

THEN-—THE GIVER is responsible for the taxes.

A government has every right to eliminate (forgive) a tax - because it is the government that levied the tax to begin with - and therefore the government’s to forgive.

Conversely, the government has no right to forgive a private debt. To do so would be to decide arbitrarily that certain private lenders will not be repaid. Private debts are not the government’s to forgive.

If you you can’t see the difference, I can’t help you.

I like it because many places pay almost nothing in wages when employees are tipped.

This is support of the working folks. The US pays all those tax dollars to foreign counties for wars and weapons and global bully tactics.

Time for Americans to benefit from hard work. Keep in mind that servers get tipped well for really good service. If they stink, the tips are low or nonexistent.

MANY of us do not pay ‘income taxes’ because our INCOME is so low.

Agreed. I’m guessing this bad take is from his own family perspective hiring lots of tipped employees—as opposed to a sop to big donors.

” In the United States, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) established in 1963 that tips received by service employees were to be treated as taxable income, akin to wages and salaries. This recognition was further reinforced by the passage of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) in 1974, which included tips in the definition of wages for Social Security and Medicare tax purposes. These legal measures aimed to ensure consistency in the treatment of income and fair taxation.

Several relevant tax laws and regulations govern the taxation of tips. The Internal Revenue Code (IRC) serves as the primary source of federal tax law in the United States, providing guidelines for reporting and withholding requirements related to tip income. Employees are required to report cash tips received within a calendar month to their employers, while employers have obligations to collect and report tip income, allocate tips among employees if necessary, and withhold income and payroll taxes on tip income. Form 8027, the Employer’s Annual Information Return of Tip Income and Allocated Tips, assists employers in accurately reporting tip income.

The rationale behind taxing tips encompasses multiple factors. First and foremost, consistency in the tax treatment of income is essential. Treating all forms of income equally helps maintain fairness and prevents preferential treatment of certain types of earnings. Taxing tips ensures that individuals who receive tips contribute their fair share to the tax system and prevents an unfair advantage compared to individuals in other occupations who do not receive tips. Furthermore, taxing tips promotes fairness and equity within the tax system by distributing the tax burden more equitably.”

Sitting solidly in the no-income-tax and sales-tax-only camp I think it doesn’t go far enough. Kill all income tax. A sales tax on everything (I would consider only on new items) would do what the progressive tax claims to do and would also capture taxes from those that get income “under the table” like drug dealers and politicians - since they are likely to spend their illegal income. And speaking of illegals, it would capture their spending, too. Set a flat “rebate” amount to cover like the first 10k of spending to quiet down the poor if you must. But no filing taxes. No withholding. Just an extra 15-20% tax at the cash register.

So you are one of THOSE.

We had a restaurant close on Sunday’s because the elderly would always eat there but leave .50 tip on a $20 meal. The wait staff called in sick every Sunday due to the tipping.

It is always your choice to tip - but the can be consequences.
