Joe Biden and Donald Trump will enter CNN’s Atlanta studio next Thursday for the most important 90 minutes of this election season. What they say, the impressions they leave, their confrontations, mistakes and humanizing moments could determine who wins in November.

To understand what each camp faces, I talked with five Republicans and three Democrats who have helped presidential candidates with debates, from role-playing opponents and critiquing prep sessions to spinning the press after the studio lights were cut.
Everyone agreed that both candidates face tests of self-awareness and impulse control. Mr. Biden must demonstrate sustained mental acuity. He can’t freeze, stare blankly or sound befuddled. Mr. Trump can’t come off as unhinged or enraged. The words “rigged election” shouldn’t pass his lips. He has to keep his cool and can’t make it all about himself.

The experts I interviewed agreed that Mr. Trump should make the election a referendum on Mr. Biden’s four years while Mr. Biden should make it a choice between the stability he’ll provide and Mr. Trump’s chaos.
Mr. Trump has the easier task of validating the public’s feelings of discontent. He can hammer the cost of living, the border crisis and the decline of public safety in many American cities. Voters already think Mr. Trump is better at handling these issues. The former president should spend as much time on what he’ll do in his second term as on Mr. Biden’s failings.
Experts cautioned that Mr. Trump shouldn’t overhype issues, such as by blaming Mr. Biden for Americans getting killed by illegal migrants, an argument that can easily be turned back against him. All it takes is one such victim on Mr. Trump’s watch for Mr. Biden to flip the issue on him and muddy the waters.

The fact that so many of the enemy including James Carville have been pushing this narrative makes be believe Trump won't show up, but not by choice.
I find it very ominous that Trump's "hush money" conviction sentencing is overdue, and I think they will throw him in jail for the next few months at least by this weekend.
Its evil but its brilliant, and the dirty secret is that there are a lot of Beltway Republicans who would wet their pants like a giddy school girl if this happened.
If I had to put money on it, that's to side I would take. I think FJB's handlers have painted themselves into a corner here. They can't let him on that stage for 90 minutes; he'll give the satirists years of material. But how they get out without giving them more?
Not watching this. I wish Trump had refused.
wall street junk is more like it.
what a herd of rinos.
spit.
well,, its obvious really.
the left always crafts the narrative that the right is guilty of what the left is doing , or is about to do.
and the last few days has been the
cheap ( deep) fake videos narrative.
so i think the debate will have deep fake biden .
ymmv
.
The most powerful man in the world can’t shirk a debate even in hostile territory. Trump well not be surprised by anything that happens. He will be ready and be himself. Anything else would look fake. Let Trump be Trump.
see what i mean .

you probably wont see both of them while joe is squaking...
just a cheapdeepfake max headroom close up of Obiden.
Joe has been a bully and a hothead, his entire half century in Washington.
All Trump needs to do is get under Joe’s skin a couple times, and he’ll lose it.
I hope Trump’s advisors can get him to just skillfully work Joe into a corner, so he blows his top. It shouldn’t be too hard to do.

Trump is a hot head too. Just saying.
You play the hand you’re dealt. Biden doesn’t want to debate but he couldn’t just come out and say so, so he demanded terms he didn’t think Trump would accept. If Trump quibbled on the format, Biden would have backed out and blamed it on Trump for demanding too many conditions. Trump called Biden’s bluff. Trump will gain from doing the debate, even with the deck being stacked against him. Biden has more to lose from the debate than Trump does.
...if Trump/handlers were smart.
You could be on to something there.
People watch and judge debates by style, not by substance. Trump needs to he keep his cool and make Biden lose his.
Shortly after Bush was elected, I lost interest in listening
to him.
Biden is "Joe Camel".
In thar scenario, Biden wins.
I am concerned about his safety.
Trump will lose this debate. He will keep thinking that he is talking to a real person. In order to win he just needs to pretend it is a solo interview.
