House of Representatives passed a measure on Friday automatically registering men aged 18 to 26 for selective service.
It was part of the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which sets out the U.S. government’s military and national security priorities over the next fiscal year.
This year's NDAA authorizes $895.2 billion in military spending, a $9 billion increase from fiscal 2024.
While it hasn’t been invoked in over half a century, it’s mandatory for all male U.S. citizens to register for the selective service, also known as the military draft, when they turn 18. Failure to register is classified as a felony and comes with a host of legal challenges.

Because prosecuting those who fail to register is cost prohibitive and counterproductive for the government, many young men fail to register on their eighteenth birthday or do not register at all.

Back in 1979 I skipped registering and instead joined the military. Back then they didn't automatically register me because I was actually in the Navy. Periodically I've had to dig out my DD214 to address the issue of skipping registration and instead enlisting. At least I have the DD214 but otherwise...

They are simply not going to rely on people registering themselves and also stop prosecuting those who do not register. Everyone has a SSN and probably a drivers license that’s all they need to register people with why even bother with making people fill out the post card sized form in the first place. Which is exactly what this does. Looking at today’s Gen Z I would guess 75% of them couldn’t pass an Army PFT let alone the Marine PFT. Half would end up in PCP in boot for sure. I was a D-rat at MCRD being so lean and fit when I hit the yellow foot prints my BMI was under weight even though I had been in DEP with a reserve unit for a year and could pass the graduation PFT standard on day one of MCRD.
