Newsom proposes defunding police, prisons, public safety as California faces massive deficit

Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., proposed slashing budgets regarding public safety, such as prisons and law enforcement, as the state simultaneously grapples with a crippling deficit and doubles down on climate goals relating to equity.

The California Democrat's proposed budget, released in May, notes that "difficult decisions" are necessary to address the estimated $27.6 billion deficit, which is projected to continue for years to come. It includes a $97 million cut to trial court operations, $10 million to the Department of Justice's Division of Law Enforcement and more than $80 million to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

A Newsom spokesperson initially told Fox News Digital that there were "no cuts to law enforcement." (They lied)

"The budget proposes numerous ways to make government more efficient and reduce costs for taxpayers, including cuts on inmate spending. Since Governor Newsom took office in 2019, the state has made record investments in law enforcement, including $1.1 billion to tackle crime, support police, and hold criminals accountable," the spokesperson said.

California’s projected budget deficit is expected to top $100bn by July.

And right now they haven’t cut spending even by a penny.

I think they expect Biden to bail them out.

Where are all the chirping fools praising Gruesome when California posted that phony $98B surplus funded by federal giveaways a couple years ago?

RE: How does this help Californians at all? I mean the ones that aren’t criminals?

Finally——finally——someone here talking about a minority.
The Californian without a criminal record. Except for expunged juvenile ones.

They have a convention in a vacant FotoMat booth behind a vacant video rental place in the parking lot.

RE: How about first cutting costs on illegal immigrant spending?

Not sure of California’s share but the US cost has been estimated at $400 Billion “The lion’s share of that cost is borne by state and local governments.” May 13, 2024

No one knows how much entry level and lower skilled jobs taken from Americans costs to the Americans who become destitute.

Not a joke, but there was an article in the Sunday Detroit Free Press in 1986 where a woman from Michigan moved to Florida and hated it. Her worse point: A live snake crawled up from the water in the toilet at home. Authorities said it had a simple explanation about the relative water levels outside and inside and how snakes can move.🐍🚽

That should scare off the invading Leftists.

Here are a few ideas, just off the top of my pointy little head:

STOP FUNDING ILLEGALS in any way, shape or form!

CUT YOUR BLOATED STATE GOVERNMENT across the board by 50%, if not more!

These Governors are amazingly stupid. Criminally Stupid. Mind-Boggling Stupid!

What? Are you serious? Criminal foreign invaders are a priority, even here in New York where they rob people and shoot cops. Nothing is more important than importing votes for democrats. And go figure: Trump is the guy who gets indicted 20 million times while democrats get to engage in blatant treason over and over

make government more efficient and reduce costs for taxpayers, including cuts on inmate spending.

What a laugh! Government run by the likes of Newsom "more efficient?" He'll never reduce costs for taxpayers! A new gas tax, effective July 1st will raise the cost of gas in the state, already ≈$5.00/gallon.

California has the highest marginal tax bracket for individuals at 12.3%....California has the highest state and gas taxes in the United States

The "cuts" to inmates will come about from Newsom closing the prisons and releasing the inmates back onto the streets.

76,000 inmates are eligible for early release: In May 2021, California increased early release credits for tens of thousands of inmates, including violent and repeat felons, to further trim the population of the state’s correctional system.

Deport of all of the illegals in Kalifornia to relieve the state’s budget it would be back in the black in no time.

I wish that were true. Unfortunately, knowing Newscum, we'd still be blowing billions on the high speed rail that gets used by a few rich people.

CA is always going to be wealthy, it’s baked in with the deep water ports and the world’s most advanced agricultural sector. How much greater the state could be under rational governance can only be speculated... someone should give it a try some day.

+1

They throw out tons of fruit. They have to be a certain size and shape for the grocery stores or people won’t buy them. Some times cattlemen will feed to their live stock. I’ve seen acres and acres of squash, cantaloupe, and watermelon get plowed under after they harvest the perfect ones.
