Pat Guider was in retail for more than 40 years. Twenty-plus at the old Chase-Pitkin and then, until last week, almost another 20 at Big Lots.
Almost, because they fired him.
And therein lies our story.
There’s been a lot of stealing lately, it’s the new entitlement of urban America. People just walk in, gather up armfuls or bagsful of merchandise, and walk out the door. The employees won’t stop them, the police won’t arrest them, the laws won’t hold them accountable.
Especially in New York.
In New York, retail theft – which is what they call shoplifting now – gets an appearance ticket. It’s part of the state’s pro-criminal “reforms.” Apparently, people don’t get arrested because they’re crooks, people get arrested because the society and the government and the laws are racist and oppressive and part of some big pipeline to prison or something.
Turns out, the way things are seen now, when you get arrested it’s not because you did something wrong, it’s because the cop and the society did something wrong.

I thought they were calling it ‘reparations’!!??
So, why even have cash registers at Big Lots?
It was fun to go there and get good prices on closeouts and to look through their once great international food section.
No more. Until they rehire Pat.
I went to my local big grocer. As I was coming in, this guy was leaving through the entrance with his hands full of big ticket food items, like a roasted chicken.
Oh wait they are remaking the movie in real time “Escape from New York” but this time it is real life...
My mom moved from NY in 1978.
Pat needs a mover.
The author is delusional. This travesty is EXACTLY what I would expect in a company run by this type of CEO.
Ordering employees not to report shoplifters is one thing, as the company owns the products. It is quite another to retaliate against employees for reporting crimes against said employees.
The company policy itself sounds like it may even be a criminal offense (obstruction of justice), or a civil rights violation.
Sadly this explains a lot...

I’ve watched minor theft myself. Recently at a local convenience store I was in line at the cash register, right behind a girl probably 19 or so. She had a soda to pay for. She got tired of waiting, tucked the soda under her arm and just left without paying.
I’ve watched other young people in Walmart at the chips section, pick up a bag of potato chips, open it, start eating and deposit the empty bag on a shelf somewhere else in the store.
And these self checkout places have got to be a major theft area. I really don’t see any way to stop it as the employee monitoring these things can’t possibly catch all thieves.

*******
Both should me made illegal. Management ordering employees not to report shoplifters encourages shoplifting, penalizes shareholders, and raises everyone’s prices. It doesn’t matter that the encouragers of criminals own the goods.
This company policy of firing employees who call the police when someone is assaulted (coworker or not) is likely a violation of racketeering laws.
