That's higher than I expected, given that depending on EV transportation is still fairly new, combined with IMHO EV's are good for only some use cases.

Elephant is in the room, if you have 500 million charging stations it still takes 2 hours to charge. Funny the AP doesn’t know that, where have they been? Maybe I should call them and tell them.
The Green New Deal is the same old fleece the taxpayers deal like Obama’s shovel ready jobs crap. Fund a bunch of Liberal pet projects like 7.5 billion for electric charging stations. Results: 7 charging stations, its a damn slush fund for the DNC.

Now, if you use a big alternator run by a gasoline or diesel power plant and use electric drive directly to the wheels?
That would work.
They have used it for many years by ore haulers in pit mines. They get work done.
It could even work for Trucks.
The Li-ion batteries are a fire hazard both in cars and in homes. One cell fails? If it has no detector, it is up in smoke and it is next to impossible to put the fire out. I do suspect carbon dioxide extinguishers would work if caught soon enough.

Yes. Very focused use cases. Not for general adoption, not in any way.
Honestly, given the fire hazard, right off the bat I would not ever even consider buying one. There will come a time where they will be uninsurable for this reason, never mind the issue of having a minor accident in which the battery is damaged, and it totals the car.
Never mind the EV “anxiety” issue of driving from point A to point B, and never knowing if you are going to get there due to battery running down, charging stations all used or vandalized and out of order, and a possible delay of hours due to these things.
I just cannot imagine WHY anyone in their right mind would buy one.

They are kind of neat. The engineering that it took to turn a golf cart into an attractive transportation option FOR SOME PEOPLE SOME OF THE TIME was brilliant.
Of course, conversion of the ICE fleet into electrics is never going to happen, a) because the grid buildout to support it is impossible; and b) because they are a very limited-use product with a very high total cost of ownership.
If I were retired, living in the Villages, and needed to go to Publix twice a week and an occasional Trump rally I would seriously look at one.
Americans are pinching pennies and watching their market basket purchases with the same dollars get smaller weekly, but the administration morons want those same Americans to buy cars that cost a year’s pay. That does not include the higher insurance and maintaining the follies.

Yeh, they’re basically a throwaway item. Battery pack replacement will be a major cost perhaps as much as half of the purchase price of a new car.
The poll results don’t match up with actual EV sales numbers. 7% of all car sales in the US were Evs last year. California helped the sales figure with ~25% of new car sales being EVs
Shying away? Uh, hard pass. EVs are like the CFL light bulbs. They suck and you need a hazmat team to dispose of them. Totally not worth it.
Sometimes the stats include Hybrid, which boomed last year.
But sometimes they are pure and do not.
Despite? I’m staying away because of Biden’s push.
1) I'm married and live in an area where we need 2 cars for the days we split up to run separate errands.
2) It was time to replace my wife's car anyway.
3) We can set up charging at home.
4) We drive tons of local miles charged at home (14K miles in the past 12 months) to make the gas savings and oil change savings worth it, but usually slow charge the battery.
5) We don't live in the cold north nor do we often make road trips north during the winter.
6) Most of the road trips we make are along areas with plenty of fast charging options (though we do have the gas pickup we can take if we decide to drive to other areas).
7) When we drive on long trips my wife wants to stop every 200 or so miles and walk around for 10-15 minutes. (Again, we have the gas pickup I can take on a road trip if I go without my wife.)
Last year we drove the EV from Alabama to east Canada and back. But again, that's an example of both a time (summer trip up north, not winter trip up north) and an area (densely populated eastern seaboard with many chargers) that EV's are good. The gas and oil change savings are real, and we drive it enough so that the savings more than offset the extra costs that come with an EV.
Great 2nd car for many suburbanites.
And we don’t own one.
