Whether it is the fountain of youth or the elixir of life, men have travelled the world looking for the key to increasing their longevity.
They should be looking a bit closer to home, according to one leading researcher – although after they do, they might end up taking the years God intended for them.
When it comes to increasing the lifespan of any male mammal, “there is one way you can intervene”: castration.
Cat Bohannon, the celebrated author of Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution, said men went through life “smuggling two little death nuggets”, with research suggesting an orchiectomy can lend a few more precious years.
Speaking at the Hay festival on Friday, Bohannon said castration was a “way to make male mammals live longer”. This effect was observed in American men in the mid-20th century who were institutionalised, usually because of mental illness, and castrated, and in Korean eunuchs. The castrated men lived longer than their “regularly balled peers”.
“You can castrate it. Cut off its balls. Don’t try this at home,” added Bohannon, a researcher with a PhD from Columbia University in the evolution of narrative and cognition.
While it used to be thought that the average lifespan discrepancy was behavioural – “dumb boys doing dumb boy stuff” – it in fact “seems to have something deeply to do with the immune system and cellular repair”, she said. Males “get more infections” across their lifespan and “more cancer, and the prognoses in many cases tend to be a bit worse”.
A 2012 study published in Current Biology found that the average lifespan of 81 eunuchs born between 1556 and 1861 was 70 years, which was 14.4–19.1 years longer than the lifespan of non-castrated men of similar socioeconomic status.

The Guardian is a complete joke. Nothing more need be said.
What a stupid article.
Either she has a really nice rack or that picture is deceiving.
I know. Those think rimmed glasses do it for me!
She looks rather smug. Ok lady, you want men castrated? Come after mine and see what happens to you….
Yeah-maybe if she has them removed she’ll live longer.
Set the example by having your nipples removed beeoch
Castration brings on a host of other medical issues that can and will kill you.
I think that once you reach 70 years, most of us are ready to go when the Lord calls us home. I don’t know of anyone that really worries as much as they did 10 years earlier. One is resigned to their fate, whatever it will be, and not concerned about extending it, particularly ones like your Grandfather who is relegated to home confinement.
The author must be a Lorena Bobbitt fan.
What the Hell does a female know about having balls?
I’m 76 and everything still works.
I once read a statement about a conversation between LBJ and Barry Goldwater when LBJ was near death. Barry could not resist asking LBJ why he agreed to be JFK’s VP. Just the day before the announcement LBJ was asked in public if he was going to accept the offer, he replied: Why would I do that, I’m the 2nd most powerful person in Congress, “Why would I let JFK cut off my balls?”
The next day he accepted the VP position. Reason? He told Barry that Kennedy told him: OK I’ll have my brother examine your radio and TV Holdings in Texas (he knew he was had).
But does it prevent COVID?
It’s probably due to the primordial Instinct of protecting territory, or taking territory. Understand that territory has various meanings from actual real estate, hunting grounds, clawing and fighting your way to the top of a organization or a mountain or any number of things that are obstacles or opportunities or challenges in life. Males of all species have the same traits. Humans don’t necessarily die in their pursuit of their goals.
I’m not sure if married men have shorter lifespans, it takes organization and proper care and vital sanitation habits to avoid an early death. I would think that women live longer because of males, in both nomadic and modern settings.
My parents are both 95, my mother has been shuffled between the hospital and rehab/nursing home for the last 3 months but my dad is vaguely aware of it for only a few seconds a day while he is in an assisted living memory care. They aren’t really living and they’re burning through their savings rapidly. Everything they’ve worked for is going away. Longevity doesn’t appear to be worth it.
If I change my mind can I replace what I had with elephant testicles?
I agree with the author, we should have all male democrats castrated so they live longer (most of them already are)
That’s absolute BS. Castrate your dog, and watch him do nothing but lay around on the couch and put on weight until he dies a premature death from cardiovascular disease.
FO Ella Creamer with your BS science.
I have seen how people die(hospitals, nursing homes ans in-home hospice). There are worse things than death (which we are going to do anyway). I prefer to go in my sleep but we don’t get to choose. I’ll never forget my grandmother told me in the nursing home “Don’t ever grow old”.
I guess RINO politicians should live long lives. THEY HAVE NO BALLS
