Commish’s crony cleric: NYC’s first female, openly gay FDNY chaplain awarded huge promotion with $160K pay
New York Post ^ | June 1, 2024 | Susan Edelman

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh has named a pastor with no clinical experience to run the FDNY’s counseling services for firefighters and medics struggling with mental-health problems — an appointment that will require the department to hire another licensed supervisor at taxpayer expense to plug the gap.

Kavanagh tapped Ann Kansfield, the FDNY’s first female and openly gay chaplain, as chief of the department’s Counseling Services Unit, which runs a staff of psychologists and therapists who conduct screening, assessment and treatment of job candidates and ailing first-responders.

Kansfield, 48, whom Kavanagh has called her “spiritual muse” — served as one of nine FDNY chaplains, last year collecting $39,809 in salary and overtime.

As CSU director, her salary will jump to $159,650, officials said.

An FDNY officer blasted Kansfield’s appointment as “another example of a friend of Kavanagh receiving a high-paying job at the expense of the citizens of New York,” saying it will further erode morale in the rank-and-file.

Kavanagh defended her decision.

“As our first responders face an unprecedented mental health crisis, they deserve strong managers with a proven track record of dedication to the FDNY and the mental health of all our members,” Kavanagh said in a statement to The Post.

She reminds me of the old “It’s Pat” bit on SNL, in which Kevin Nealon kept asking Pat questions intended to reveal her actual gender, but the answers were always ambiguous and open to different interpretations. “Do you have a - a significant other?” “Yes.” “What is your significant other’s name?” “Chris.”

“...has named a pastor with no clinical experience to run the FDNY’s counseling services for firefighters and medics struggling with mental-health problems.”

Scott Adams, when he wrote “The Dilbert Principle,” did so in a tongue in cheek mock of the Peter Principle.

“In the future, people won’t rise to their level of incompetence, but will be installed at there, without ever passing through any levels of competence.”

I don’t think he thought it really would really turn out that way. At least certainly not to the extent that Wokism has taken it.

“Kavanagh oversaw the diversification of the FDNY applicant pool, including graduating the largest group of women in nearly three decades.(snip...)

Kavanagh’s tenure as commissioner has been met with opposition by the rank and file members of the FDNY based on her relatively young age, lack of any experience as a first responder and allegations of her department demoting older more experienced Fire Chiefs.”

But diversity and ugly bull dykes are what you want when you’re stuck in a smoky building.

There is absolutely nothing ‘progressives’ don’t destroy.

Here’s some honest counseling. Stop working for NY City, move, and get a job at a fire department in a long-time red county. The pay and benefits won’t be as much, but then you won’t think about committing suicide either.

What is she going to counsel them on, The Art of Carpet Munching?

Surely it won’t be anything Biblical.

the pay and pensions from a NY city or state job are out of this world....they stay for the money and pension....

so please don't depend on these people to actually protect the country if it meant going against their dept ...because they won't...

get rid of all govt pensions...only 401ks...and then people can honestly leave that hell hole and other hell holes without losing all their retirement...

"the pay and pensions from a NY city or state job are out of this world...."

I put 33 years worth of pension donations in the NY State Retirement Fund to currently receive $41,402.00 a year. It wasn't that much when I retired as a Sergeant 20 years ago. I was making almost $70,000 when I retired. Every September, once I'd been retired for 5 years, I get a cost of living increase which amounts to about $15 or less a month, and then of course my State insurance plan rates go up. Medicare is my primary insurance, and the Empire Plan is my secondary insurance. The State pays for nothing other than through their Medicare-approved prescription plan via CVS Caremark. I pay $5.00 per script, and $55 for none-approved medications. I lost Vision Care and Dental coverage when I retired. I won't complain. It's more than I would have ever made had I stayed working in an office situation as a divorced mother of two sons all those years ago. I took the job as a Correctional Officer with the State, after working in a County job that paid about $7,000 a year, and moved myself and my kids three hours away to Auburn, New York in order to be able to take the job. My starting pay with the State as a Trainee was $11,700. Once I passed probation, my salary went to $12,500. We were there for 3 1/2 years before a prison opened up back in the area I had been living in since 1973, so I could transfer back there.

One thing I learned from working in uniform, and being in a job that had high divorce, high alcohol and high suicide rates, was that you had to find something of interest to do off the job. The problem with a large number of the men I worked with was, other than hunting season, a lot of them had no hobbies the rest of the year. They'd leave work at 3 p.m., and head to the local drinking hole where C.O.'s hung out. They'd sit there for hours and drink, and talk about the stupid shit that happened on the job that day. And they'd do that every day after leaving work. That's the worse thing a person can do. You can't take the job home with you, because it will definitely screw up your head. And today, there are even more weak people in this world who can't cope with even simple problems...like Donald Trump being elected President.

Homosexual and chaplain are an oxymoron.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NASBS
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, [10] nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. [11] Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
