Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a longtime moderate Democrat, announced on Friday that he is registering as an independent.
Manchin announced last year that he would not run for reelection in the deep red state, creating an opportunity for Republicans to flip the Senate seat. The news that Manchin has registered as an independent raises fresh questions, however, over his political future and aspirations.
“Our national politics are broken and neither party is willing to compromise to find common ground,” Manchin, who has long been a pivotal swing vote in the Senate, said in a statement. “To stay true to myself and remain committed to put country before party, I have decided to register as an independent with no party affiliation and continue to fight for America’s sensible majority.”

He can take a hike. He voted solidly with the radical, far left on every really big and important issue!
He’s trying to prove he can fo just as much damage as an independent as he did as a Democrat.
My : “Who gives a crap”failed to load.sorry JOE your train left the station a long time ago an you were not on it1 Try the 3:10 to YUMA!
LEX
So who is the weaker read blowing in the wind, Manchin or Pence.
Manchin being Manchin. He only stands for the next paycheck.
Another life-long RAT chameleon like ex-NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Tulsi Gabbard. Opportunists changing their party to suit their political need at a given time. Beware the chameleon!🦎
BWAhahahahahahaha!!!
You've been Schumer's whore since the instant you set foot in DC, you filthy $&%^.
Manchin does what Schumer tells him to do.
He’s fooled the people of West Virginia for the last timer - Traitor Joe is done for.
I do like his timing. Right after the Trump verdict.
““Our national politics are broken and neither party is willing to compromise to find common ground,”
No Joe, YOUR filthy party is broken. GFY,
He wants to get a gig as the “independent” pol on MSNBC or CNN after he leaves office. Time to cash in.
It’s election time, suddenly Manchin wants to look more like a Republican so he can fool WV voters again. Then he will come to the rescue of the Dems.
Gun grabber Jo co authored the most heinous anti 2A legislation during the Obama years…. He was and has been re- elected after his gun grab attempt.
He is even lauded on FR as someone they would love to join the republicans.
Of course, with republicans who are silent on funding bidens budget… maybe he would fit right in.
There was that anti 2A republican prez that signed a bumpstock ban… and the NRA was silent… the progressives were celebrating.
Of course they celebrated lockdowns and big pharma while cities were literally burning.
No church, but burning down cities in masks… Yes!
No one cares Joe…
Yeah, it’s not a coincidence that he choose to do it today.
I think this thing has crossed a line for a lot of people.
I have never lived in a state where people were required to register as anything. We just asked for a ballot for one of the parties during the primary election. I am nit sure what being registered as Independent means. There is no Independent Party. Shouldn’t that be called “unaffiliated”, but again, so what? He is going out of office and I am betting he will continue to caucus with the Democrats. Does this give him some kind of leverage with Schumer? The clock is still close to running out on him so, so what?
I’m a believer that if we are going to have a party system then only members of that party should be involved in picking that party’s candidate. To allow Dems to vote I the primary to pick the Rep candidate and vis-a-visa is akin to having the foxes vote for who is guarding the hen house !
I am with you.
