Panicked Politico Warns Public Schools Might Close Thanks to Success of School Choice Under DeSantis

Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Republicans have spent years aggressively turning the state into a haven for school choice. They have been wildly successful, with tens of thousands more children enrolling in private or charter schools or homeschooling.

Now as those programs balloon, some of Florida’s largest school districts are facing staggering enrollment declines — and grappling with the possibility of campus closures — as dollars follow the increasing number of parents opting out of traditional public schools.

This is good news. Free choice in schools is a big winner at the polls.

We have to burn the village to save it.

Public schools can adapt or close. Either outcome would be better than what they are now.

Simply a free-market benefit. Offer competition and the lousy provider sinks to the bottom, where it should be.

No different than if your town had nothing but mediocre restaurants. In move a few good ones, and so long to the slouches.

Competition raises the bar - good for everyone except the lunatics who want to indoctrinate your kids.

Yes, the establishment may lose their indoctrination centers. Abolish the Education Department and get Big Brother out of the business of raising our children. What needs to happen is all the public money being spent on education today has to be placed in the hands of parents who need to ‘buck up’ and take charge of properly and responsibly raising their children.

Definitely a winning idea for Republicans. Give people a choice. It’s not like the teachers union will suddenly stop voting Republican.

Teacher unions are a money laundering scheme for Democrats. They pay teachers with taxes and unions send it back as political contributions. It is a sick system.

The schools that are closing is due to them being horrible schools.

Sounds like positive results to me.

Just allowing school choice is not enough. Government "requiring" by law the teaching of DEI, trans-rights, homo-rights in "every" (public or private) schools must be stopped in both State Houses and Congress. We need to start hanging judges who attempt to undo the will of the people.

We have anti-Christian Marxists and perverts dictating to our government(s). This must end!

Government support for education is one thing. Government schools is something else. We don’t need government schools.

Do you know who would favor government schools? Hitler, Stalin, and Mao.

I have a relative who is a Marxist. She would agree. She has a PHD in psychology and a practice as a counselor. She has opposed school choice for years, decades even. She recently surprised me by saying that she would support school choice - with one condition. It must include payment for counselling services. SMH.

Florida’s largest school districts

Which is to say: Florida furthest left, least effective at actually teaching students, schools.

The panic is coming from the teachers union who see many jobs in jeopardy. If only they cared as much about educating children they wouldn’t be facing this problem.

One of the early failures of public schools was making slow learning a disability that could be treated with drugs. Attention deficit syndrome was used to pumped kids up with speed. Awful.

Implement Friedman’s school plan. Institute a voucher system where you get a voucher equal to the property taxes you pay. You can use the voucher to pay the tuition at any school you want. Good schools will likely cost more than bad schools, but competition has a way of weeding out the bad. Each family is entitled to two “free” tuition payments. If you’re retired and don’t need a voucher, you can sell it on an open market to someone with more than 2 kids. Competition will see the good schools bubble to the top.
