Ukrainian strike on Russian nuclear radar system causes alarm in West

A Ukrainian drone strike on a Russian radar station that can track nuclear missiles has sparked alarm in the West.

Kyiv hit the Armavir radar station in the Krasnodar border region on May 23, damaging the state-of-the-art facility, which provides conventional air-defence as well as forming part of Moscow’s nuclear warning system.

Ukrainian officials confirmed on Saturday that their forces had carried out the strike, saying the facility monitors airspace over the country and occupied Crimea.

The radar station has reportedly been able to track long-range Atacms missiles, delivered by the US to Ukraine earlier this year.

Mauro Gilli, a senior researcher at the Centre for Security Studies at ETH Zurich, said the drone strike had been a tactical success because it will force Russia to redeploy air defence systems and it also put down a marker that no Russian military site was untouchable.

Exactly. Ukraine didn’t strike anything - at all. Whatever happened did so under the direction and control of the United States. I remain convinced that they want WWIII and will not stop until the nukes start flying.

Stand in front of a mirror. Look hard. You’ll be looking at a prime example why we used to put people in the funny farm. You’re extremely unhinged and incapable of intelligent thought. Fortunately for things such as you, you can run your filth from your mouth without trouble. I don’t recommend talking in front of real men though. You truly disgust me, all you war cheerleaders. Truly disgust me to the core.

I’m at the point where these types of things get the max aggression treatment in person. They’re nut jobs who want to get my countrymen killed. As an infantry vet, I will put down all threats. I can be a great friend or a worse enemy and these lunatics always figure the latter is better.

The Ukie cheerleaders are going nutter because the front line is stretching like an old rubber band.

They see an enemy in everyone who refuses to goosestep with them on provoking a wider war.

I’ve dealt with a few up here.

They care so much. Get going. Head to the front line. They won’t go. Cowards and useless eaters.

I agree. All it takes is one wrong decision and the button is pushed.

Keep goosestepping with Vicky Nuland to World War III, bertie my lad.

You can still volunteer for the front lines in the Donbas or Kharkov...

Yea, and he ‘conveniently’ forgets that there was only ONE ELECTION in Maybe in either Ukraine or Russia, and that election was NOT in Ukraine.

But we’re seeing more of the emotional undoing of the Zeepers as Russia rolls up more land. It really does appear strange, at least to me. I can see an emotional bond to Israel, given its long history, its biblical history, and it being loaded with relics from Ancient History. Same for Greece and Rome, but Ukraine - place has no past, probably no future, and nothing to give the world.

So there’s something more with this bunch, and I doubt we ever find out, other than the several people here that volunteered to disclose their personal ties, and the many in government (including working for DeSantis), with very close ties to Ukraine...they squirmed right into power.

Yes, but it was Honest Bribe Money for access to Joe Biden and Unlimited US Taxpayer Cash (for a 10% kickback to Joe Biden).

Hunter wasn't required to work or anything like that.

I did a little Wikipedia research. (Cut and paste the link into your browser):

https://www.google.com/maps/place/44%C2%B055‘30.4%22N+40%C2%B059’02.0%22E/@44.9250258,40.9829452,350m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d44.9251111!4d40.9838889?hl=en&entry=ttu

The Wavelength is 50 cm, so the operating frequency is 600 MHz. Wikipedia gives the power as 0.6 MW, or 600 kW, I assume peak power. Scaling off the map above, it appears that the horizontal aperture is about 70 ft. All these parameters are very similar to a US PAVE PAWS, 420 MHz, 700 kW peak, ~ 70 diameter. PAVE PAWS were designed to detect submarine launched ballistic missiles, and were distributed around the periphery of the continental United States (lower 48). Same with this class of radars, about the Russian borders.

It appears that the radar faces, the big boxes casting shadows, are canted at 90 degrees to each other. Assuming that’s approximately true, and each face is capable of scanning +/- 45 degrees the two faces would furnish coverage +/- 90 degrees, i.e., approximately hemispherical coverage looking south.

This link gives you an appreciation of the field of view:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/44%C2%B055‘30.4%22N+40%C2%B059’02.0%22E/@-35.3571891,39.9167938,2.99z/data=!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d44.9251111!4d40.9838889?hl=en&entry=ttu

The published 8000 km range is about southern Madagascar. It can pick up launches from the Indian Ocean and south eastern Atlantic. It does not cover one square meter of airspace over Ukraine (north of Crimea).

On thing it will do is provide surveillance of all near earth satellites, all of which must cross the equator. It should be able to provide good coverage of all low earth orbits.

Regardless, this is a valuable Russian defense asset, though of no immediate tactical value in the Ukraine war. I suspect that the U.S. asked Ukraine to take out that radar as a favor. It might be used to cue fire control radars to take out Star Link or other communications satellites in LEO, if the Russians want to escalate.

Regardless, this is a serious poke in Ivan’s eye, and is going to smart.

” It does not cover one square meter of airspace over Ukraine (north of Crimea).”

Thanks, I knew the Leftists here were handing us BS, like they always do, but I just don’t have the expertise to deal with specifics like this.

And I agree, the targeting had to come from the US (or at least NATO), like all other targeting, other than maybe some battlefield level targeting. It’s not a secret anymore, as the Germans disclosed exactly that.
