Macron’s empire is falling apart
The Spectator ^ | 5/24/24 | Jonathan Miller

‘Maoré na Farantsa paka tcho!’, Emmanuel Macron declared five years ago campaigning in Mamoudzou, speaking the local language of Shimaoré in the capital city of Mayotte, a French-ruled archipelago-commune in the Indian Ocean. Translation: Mayotte and France, for ever, in life until death. The French president returned to the islands this week to play emperor but his empire looks like it’s falling apart.

Even by the standard of Macron’s habitual wishful thinking, Mayotte is a disaster. Like much of the French empire – an empire that pretends not to be one – Macron indulges a fantasy that its remote colonies are really just part of France itself. Racked with riots, crime and poverty, the latest problem in Mayotte is a flux of African refugees hated by the locals.

Few French people could find Mayotte on a map and its economic contribution to the country is negative. Other than conceit, it’s incomprehensible why France insists on keeping its tricolor flying here. Like much of la France d’outre mer, it’s a bottomless pit into which the French pour subsidies for benefits that seem minimal.

The last three world powers distintegrated in the same way:

1. France (1643-1815)
2. Britain (1815-1945)
3. US (1945-?)

Hoping these empires return is like hoping the Ottoman or Hapsburg empires come back.

“Hoping these empires return is like hoping the Ottoman or Hapsburg empires come back.”

Cannot speak for Hapsburg, but Ottoman is well on its way to coming back to life, although it’s unlikely to be run by Turkey this time.

Well, perhaps not. Mayotte is a good customer and buys French stuff .

French Africa still provides stuff and then serves as a French customer. The process is changing however it persists

Those pesky American salesmen just won’t stay away

I had a long and intense relationship with a Hapsburg, she was a black sheep that had been cut off from the family and forced to live without great wealth, somehow she struggled on the 1.3 million (in today’s dollars) annual survival income the family gave her, she couldn’t cook but she played a great piano, and man did we party.

Macron is an idiot, but this article is about as idiotic. Mayotte is not “French ruled” it is a Department and overseas region of France, an integral part of the French Republic. This is due to multiple, overwhelming votes by the people of the Island that 1) rejected independence as part of the Comoros, and 2) integrated the Island as part of France.

While lagging Metropolitan France, they are light years ahead of the Comoros. They are a stronghold of the National Rally Party and Marie Le Pen, that’s right Mayotte, the most African and Muslim department of France also gave Madame Le Pen and the National Rally party thier highest level of support in the 2022 elections.

Belgium and France used the same colonial era management after they free former colonys. The ports, railways, air transportation, utilities, etc., are run by either French or Belgium nationals, even today. These countries are locked into economic tandem with their former colonial masters.

It is correct to say the French consider these type countries their own.

Without management in the 60s onward many countries would have more than failed and as now they would have sought Chinese or Russian suitors.

France is undergoing a normal revulsion to their own mismanagement in Paris. Most of the world sees the west a having a sickness of sexual deviants destruction of their in culture.
