Hundreds of people from Ashdod and neighboring areas gathered on the city’s beach on Saturday to see a US army vessel that had become stuck on the beach next to a piece of the floating pier that the US built recently to bring aid to Gaza. The vessel, LCM 8558, is a landing craft.
The US Army and the IDF worked together during the late afternoon to try to find a solution for the beached vessel. A front loader dug out sand from beneath its large propellers.
Then, the front loader was attached to the starboard bow of the vessel to try to pivot the watercraft to free it. Low tide prevented this from working.
Eventually, the USAV Matamoros, a US naval ship, arrived offshore to try to help. As the sun set, the IDF attempted to help with a drone to bring a line out to the Matamoros. This did not work, because the current carried the line too strongly, and the drone was not strong enough. Later, men attempted to swim the line out to the waiting vessel.
Meanwhile, the landing craft remained marooned on the beach. This was a rare example of the ability of the US and Israel to work in real-time to free a vessel like this. It is likely the first time in history that a US army vessel has been grounded on a beach on the coast of Israel.

The pier was built near Ashdod and then towed off the coast of Gaza, where it became operational in early May, allowing trucks to bring pallets from it to shore.

Unmentioned in the headlilne, part of the pier broke off as well. Funny Joe's stuff washed up at Ashdod. I know wanted to build the pier for Dearborn, but Ashdod is the second largest port in Israel. A half hour drive to the Erez crossing to Gaza. Probably a bit longer to wash up there.
Levity aside, an embarrassment for the administration and possibly the military.

It's not named after the city, it is named for the battle that occurred there during the Mexican-American war in which American forces were victorious. The name "Matamoros," by the way, means "Moor (Moslem) killer."
This fiasco has all the hallmarks of a DEI jugf***.
Biden sold off most of the Army Watercraft, tugs and salvage gear and also closed the maritime desk at the NSC so we are lacking the proper equipment and expertise.
I saw a picture of one of them on NBC News. I was appalled at the amount of rust on the craft. Doesn’t the army know how to scrape and paint?
That wasn’t the point, but I’m guessing we did not.
We name lots of ships after battles that we won, not necessarily naval battles, like Saratoga and Ticonderoga, and Coral Sea, all the names of aircraft carriers.
The battle of Matamoros was a naval engagement during the Texas Revolution on April 3, 1836, between the brig Montezuma of the Mexican Navy and the schooner Invincible of the Texas Navy.
Don’t you remember The Wackiest Ship in the Army? An old Jack Lemmon movie that they later made a TV series from.
