The 'America First' Right Coalesces To Change Foreign Policy
realclearpolitics ^ | May 25 | By Jonathan Draeger

Sen. Vance, freshman senator from Ohio, started the conference critiquing what he called the foreign policy consensus: “One of my favorite passages from the Bible is ‘by their fruits, you shall know them.’ What are the fruits of the last 40 years of American foreign policy? Of course, it's a disaster in Iraq. It's a disaster in Afghanistan and Syria. It's [a disaster] in Lebanon. On issue after issue after issue, somehow, the foreign policy consensus in this town seems to almost always be wrong.”

He levied this critique against the current war in Ukraine as well, saying that his biggest criticism of the United States’ approach in Ukraine is that it “has no strategic end in sight, and it's not leading anywhere. It's not going to ultimately be good for our country.”

Vance made a similar argument in a recent speech to the Senate last month, critiquing the recent foreign aid bill that will give $61 billion to Ukraine. He said on the floor of the Senate that the U.S. should pursue a diplomatic solution and that there was a “deal on the table 18 months ago, but the Biden administration pushed Zelenskyy to set aside the peace agreement and to engage in a disastrous counteroffensive, a counteroffensive that killed thousands, tens of thousands of Ukrainians.”

Some have critiqued Vance’s stance, such as Alexander Motyl, a professor of political science at Rutgers, who recently wrote in The Hill that any negotiation with Putin would be futile. Motyl argued that Putin “repeatedly stated that nothing short of Ukraine’s capitulation and transformation into a Russian province would satisfy him.” To further his point, he cited Putin’s 2021 essay titled “On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians,” where Putin argued that “Russians and Ukrainians are one people.”

Really. What’s in it for us? Ukraine is not really our ally. They can’t even be bothered to vote with us on an anti-Israel UN resolution. We sure don’t get much for our money.

Everybody keeps missing the point. When oil and gas were cheap, when Trump was President, Russia and Iran were relatively quiet. Wars are expensive.

We really should stop meddling with other countries. No more color revolutions.

Yep. Stop wasting our money and our soldier’s lives. Focus instead on our own country.

“We sure don’t get much for our money.”

We get a lot more than you think.

The feds have black sites and bio/chem labs in the Ukraine. The Ukraine’s biggest exports to us are pig iron, pipes, sunflower seeds, juices and soybeans. In 2019, of the $1.3 billion in U.S. imports from Ukraine, the top commodity sectors were Base metals (59.0%), Agriculture products (12.0%), and Machinery and Mechanical Appliances (9.5%). It has shrunk some as of 2022, but it still is high.

True - wars are expensive - and we’re picking up much of the tab.

“We really should stop meddling with other countries”

And when dictators are meddling in other countries (how many Ukraine top politicians did Putin poison and attempt to kill since 2004?????) are we silent???

It is mere head in the sand pretense that the top bad actors in the world will leave everybody else alone if WE just go away.

For instance, if we just “get out of South Korea” the likely result will be a new Korean War. How will that affect our ally Japan? Will China help North Korea succeed this time.

Isolationism is not a recipe for peace.

Isolationism is not a recipe for peace.

Exactly. You can ignore evil, but evil will not ignore you.

Every diplomat who has actually negotiated with Russians will say the same. Bad faith is the default mode with them. Like the moslems' taqqiya, it's an article of the Russian secular religion to lie to Westerners and laugh about it later.

What about Ukraine is in our national interest?

Stability in Africa. Ukraine accounts for 10%-12% of the worlds' grain exports, and a lot of that goes to feed Africa. We do not need any more instability there than there already is, (thanks in part to Russian "mercenaries").
