The massive "doomsday glacier" known for its rapid destabilization is undergoing a "vigorous ice melt" that scientists say could reshape sea level rise projections.
In a new study, glaciologists from the University of California, Irvine, found that warm, high-pressure ocean water is seeping beneath West Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier, making it more vulnerable to melting than previously thought. The glacier is roughly 80 miles across, the widest on Earth. It packs so much ice that if it were to completely collapse, it could singlehandedly cause global sea levels to rise by more than two feet, according to the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, prompting its moniker as the "Doomsday Glacier."

Twice a day sea water rises two feet and then recedes. Sometimes more, sometimes less, at different times in different places, but this happens everywhere on a regular basis. It’s called tides.

So build dykes. It’ll give the chronically unemployed with prison builds gainful employment laying down pilings and building dykes on top of them, and then routinely maintaining the dykes. It’s good enough for the Dutch. It’ll be good enough for New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles and Charleston. If you mix coffee grounds into the cement, it makes it extra strong, I’ve heard.

Dyke kits. Assembly required, bring your own jack hammers.

Do you know how many square meters of surface water is in all of the seas? This big chunk of ice would just go bloop and nobody would notice.
That's how big this chunk of ice is. Although the two foot rise is if the entire thing completely melts, which means the sun either blew up or someone put the Earth in an oven.

Hey alloysteel, I spent an hour surfing the web for info on this now-famous "Doomsday Glacier": here's what I found. First of all there's a chart from NASA and BBC below that clearly shows this glacial area is below sea level. That suggests the glacier is sitting mostly over seawater, not land, so your floating ice cube hunch seems to fit :- )
Other things I learned in no particular order:
- The U.S. has three permanent scientific stations on Antarctica. But the closest station (at the South Pole) is 1,000 miles away from the Glacier. And shipboard researchers soon tire of the frigid weather and sailing home to Argentina is much more fun.
- Two fairly detailed geographic maps of Antarctica here and here do not even identify the malignant glacier. Was that scientific negligence? Or was the Doomsday Glacier a recent "convenient discovery" for climate alarmists?
- Wikipedia says $50 million was allocated in 2017 to explore the glacier. With that kind of money in the kitty, is it any surprise that "scientists" reported something significant?
- The area of Antarctica is massive -- about 1.4 times that of Canada.
- Except for the month of June, the average temperature stays below freezing. Wikipedia says an average 6.5 inches of snow falls on the continent each year -- of which very little melts with the exception of certain coastal areas. So the steady addition of snow each year is what fuels the glacier engine. Ah, but has anyone reconciled the annual collection versus discharge by glaciers and melting of ice? And who has the capability to measure it all across this vast frigid continent?

It’s the same with bomb cyclone - and that term was dreamed up by a scientist.
Lame.

Hey HKMk23.
I didn’t read your comment before I wrote of my own — and there’s a great image (BBC/NASA) I found that also supports the money quote and sub-sea level ice you mentioned.
You did some nice digging and analysis.

The two foot rise in sea level is a very plausible result of the melting of the entire glacier. Whether or not the whole glacier will plausibly melt is another story, and the timescale also very much in doubt. Even the alarmists do not “predict” that it will completely melt before 2400 AD. We have time. More than 5.2821 years or whatever idiotic deadline the alarmists are peddling these days.

The problem is that “climate scientists” have a proven record of massive lying—and then trying to cover up their lies with more lies.
They are a cult of snake oil salespeople—zero credibility.
