The doomsday glacier is undergoing "vigorous ice melt" that could reshape sea level rise projections

The massive "doomsday glacier" known for its rapid destabilization is undergoing a "vigorous ice melt" that scientists say could reshape sea level rise projections.

In a new study, glaciologists from the University of California, Irvine, found that warm, high-pressure ocean water is seeping beneath West Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier, making it more vulnerable to melting than previously thought. The glacier is roughly 80 miles across, the widest on Earth. It packs so much ice that if it were to completely collapse, it could singlehandedly cause global sea levels to rise by more than two feet, according to the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, prompting its moniker as the "Doomsday Glacier."

It is winter (or almost) in Antarctica. Nothing is melting unless there is a volcanic eruption, Jimmy.

Fools will predict foolishness. Good grief!

Yawn. Wake me when Obama, Biden and others with beach front property abandon their homes.

A two foot increase in sea level would make rivers run more slowly, and flood a lot of swampy areas, and increase the effects of flooding. New Orleans is probably off the board. I doubt that any glacier that size will ever melt in one lifetime, but a two foot rise in sea levels is nothing to sneeze at.

Wow! Two feet of water might drown more of Obama’s beach house cooks!

So, all the trillions spent to combat climate change haven’t made a difference? I’m shocked. It’s interesting to read that if the glacier melts that it “could” cause sea levels to rise. Gee, it’s like they’re guessing.

if it were to completely collapse

That's the key phrase. Is there any evidence in the geologic record that a glacier of similar size has ever completely collapsed into the sea in a short period of time?

Not one of these predictions has ever come true, and there have been thousands of them, right Algore?

I am puzzled. Is the Thwaites Glacier spread out over water, or is it based on land? If the upwelling warmer water is only under the portion that is now floating on top of the ocean waters, then there will be NO CHANGE in sea level. A melting ice cube does not increase the volume of the water within the vessel in which it floats. If there is glacier that is not yet afloat in ocean water, then how does the upwelling warm water get beneath it?

Logic is not the leading skill of this organization.

Exactly, this refusal to believe in any sort of climate change or effects from said change is not logical.

A good portion of south Florida is 3 feet above seal level…or less.

I can remember …in my life when the Ohio river would freeze over solid enough to walk on. Has not happened again in almost 50 years.

Has this sea level rise prediction been corrected for the Antarctic snow and ice accumulation over the decades it will take for the “doomsday glacier” to melt?
