I wasn't considering the savory approach, and was assuming sugar or maple syrup as the main add-on. I am not sure what technique there can be in cooking grits.

Blasphemy!

Nothing - other than butter and salt - must be allowed to adulterate the wholesome goodness of grits.

I'll look the other way if you permit some of your egg yolk or bacon grease to "accidentally" seep over into it, but that's as far as my tolerance extends.
