ROME — Pope Francis congratulated California governor Gavin Newsom for his refusal to carry out the death penalty and for California’s leadership in fighting climate change, the governor’s office reported.
“I was struck by how he immediately brought up the issue of the death penalty and how proud he was of the work we’re doing in California,” Newsom said after a May 16 meeting with the pontiff in the Vatican. “I was struck by that because I wasn’t anticipating that, especially in the context of this convening.”
Shortly after his inauguration in 2019, Newsom issued an executive order imposing a temporary moratorium on the death penalty and ordered the dismantling of the state’s execution chambers at San Quentin State Prison.

The only reason a pope should be in the same room with Newsom (and Pelosi, Biden, etc all of which have met the pope multiple times) is to remind that their support of abortion is wrong and puts the church in scandal.
Publicly meeting with them implies support, while they grossly violate doctrine regarding morality.
The death penalty for perfectly innocent unborn is still in effect.

Of course. By referendum in 2016 here in liberal CA the People exercised their sovereign will and determined to retain, indeed expedite, capital punishment. Kudos to Newsom from Francis for defying the unequivocal will of the people. Natch

The reason for the death penalty is not for revenge or punishment, but out of reverence for the image of God. And, but the way, this applies to abortion as well.
