Russia Is Threatening to Expand Its Borders Again—This Time in the Baltic Sea

Russia’s Defense Ministry has unilaterally moved to revise the borders of Russian territorial waters in the Baltic Sea, drafting a government decree on the expansion without even bothering to notify NATO members Finland and Lithuania.

In reaction to the surprised responses of the Baltic Sea states, the Kremlin on Wednesday issued a statement that seems bound only to make matters worse. Insisting that there’s “nothing political” about the proposed border change, Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in the same breath that the “political situation” has in fact “changed significantly” since the borders were drawn.

“You see how tensions are escalating, what the level of confrontation is, especially in the Baltic region. This requires our agencies to take corresponding steps to ensure security,” he told reporters, using language that sounds awfully similar to Putin’s oft-repeated claim that invading Ukraine was necessary for “security” against NATO.

To paraphrase Val Kilmar as Doc Holliday:

"Oh. Finland and Lithuania, I apologize; I forgot you were there. You may go now."

Translation: The GOPe will now lobby to get another modest $100 billion to sent Ukraine to ‘protect’ them from the Russkies since Johnson and Jeffries have a power sharing agreement. And of course the gummit crooks will get their kickbacks, payoffs, grift, money laundering and favors from the military industrial complex.

No, it's you who is not listening. Keep escalating, and Russian will then match the escalation with its own escalation.

This is what happens when you have idiots in high places. Elections have consequences, stolon elections have catastrophic consequences.

Diametrically wrong. Ignore Russians, and they'll take everything they can get away with. History is what it is.

“No, it’s you who is not listening. Keep escalating, and Russian will then match the escalation with its own escalation.”

It’s kind of like the hypothetical conversation in 1941 Tokyo, after the Pearl Harbor bombing: “See they’re attacking us all over the Pacific Ocean, I told you they’d do that. That’s what Americans are, and this proves it. Glad we struck first.”

This is thousands of miles away from America. But on their border.

But NeoCon stupidity doesn’t allow them to understand they symmetric situation. Which would be an independent Quebec joining the Warsaw Pact. And Russian ships in the St Lawrence Seaway.

So Russia took ALL of Georgia in 2008 and not just the Ethnic Russian section that were being attacked by Georgia?

Lots of anti-Russian propaganda going around the depraved west, and this sounds like more of that.

LOL! America isn't threatening to invade Quebec!

Russia IS threatening all the small Baltic states, Finland, and even Norway. Constant poking with military aircraft, and jamming of GPS signals used by airliners, for example... I just read that one airline has cancelled flights into the (Latvian?) capital because of the Russian GPS jamming. There's a LOT more where that came from.

We're not doing anything at all like that to any of our neighbours.

To: Chad C. Mulligan; All

If Quebec goes independent, join the BRICs, and goes into a military alliance with Russia and China, and lets China and Russia build military bases, we would hear a whole different story from US NeoCons of the “sanctity of international borders” and the “independence of sovereign states” ... etc. etc.

So Russia took ALL of Georgia in 2008.....

Perhaps because in 2008 the rest of Georgia was strongly pro-Western and has had good relations with NATO going back to 1992?

A positively SILLY speculation. Quebec is too dependent on the rest of Canada to actually declare independence. The last "independence" flurry caused a huge outflow of industries to Ontario and the Maritimes, leaving them almost without an industrial economy. They won't do that again.
