Ocean water is pushing miles beneath Antarctica’s “Doomsday Glacier,” making it more vulnerable to melting than previously thought, according to new research which used radar data from space to perform an X-ray of the crucial glacier.
As the salty, relatively warm ocean water meets the ice, it’s causing “vigorous melting” underneath the glacier and could mean global sea level rise projections are being underestimated, according to the study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica — nicknamed the “Doomsday Glacier” because its collapse could cause catastrophic sea level rise — is the world’s widest glacier and roughly the size of Florida. It’s also Antarctica’s most vulnerable and unstable glacier, in large part because the land on which it sits slopes downward, allowing ocean waters to eat away at its ice.
Thwaites, which already contributes 4% to global sea level rise, holds enough ice to raise sea levels by more than 2 feet. But because it also acts as a natural dam to the surrounding ice in West Antarctica, scientists have estimated its complete collapse could ultimately lead to around 10 feet of sea level rise — a catastrophe for the world’s coastal communities.

Correct. But new problems emerge, for the Lone Wanderer, who emerges from Vault 111.
Things like, how do I find plasma cartridges for my plasma rifle? How many tin cans do I need to find to trade for a Stimpak? Where can I find aluminum to repair my T-60 Power Armor?
THESE are the things we will be concerned with.
“The Thwaites Glacier isn’t going anywhere since it is land based.”
Glaciers, by definition, move.
“Because that ice shelf is already floating, there would be no effect on ocean levels.”
That ice shelf is pinned up by an underwater continental shelf at its outermost part. A “little” melting there could cause a large mass of ice to plunge into the see.
“But, if it’s a glacier and not and iceberg, how is ocean eater “rushing” beneath it?”
It is rushing under the ice shelf which holds the glacier back.
Oh!, the Humanity!!!
Yes they do. But how far and how long does it take that would allow you to subscribe to the fear mongering this article professes?
That's not what the article states. Which is the reason for the discussion on this thread.
Ocean water is pushing miles beneath Antarctica’s “Doomsday Glacier,”
Oh, puleeeease! This compromised environmental “scientists” are such anti-science morons. Couldn’t they do us all a favor: end it NOW for yourselves and your extended families.

Yes

For your education. Read and we can discuss the pertinent points I have already posted.

Thanks rktman.
Next up, the photo of some Amazonian primitives threatening a helicopter with spears, trumpeted as if it just happened. ;^)
Yup! A cats ass trophy fer sure.
North Africa swings between Desert and Green Savannah in a 40,000 year cycle that has more to do with precession of the equinoxes. There are regular processes that get deliberately overlooked because some groups promote global warming to attract people to their side.
World oceans are 140MM sq mi. That’s about four million billion (3,900,000,000,000,000) sq ft.
The Thwaites glaciar is 70M sq mi, or about 0.05% the size. 2000x smaller. So if you want the oceans to rise 10 feet, you need to melt 20000 feet of glaciar.
Random site gives: sea level equiv in mm = Gt of ice / 361.8
The total volume of Thwaites is enough to raise sea levels by just over four feet.
But wait, half the glaciar is already under sea level, so now it’s barely two feet.
But wait, as sea levels rise, ocean surface area increases. This won’t change much, but it will reduce the total increase a bit.
Of course, if Thwaites melted, likely the rest of the Antarctic would be as well, so the numbers be much higher. Although as sea levels rise, more original ice is now underwater, so your msl rise is slowed down also.
“The sun won’t die for 5 billion years, so why do humans have only 1 billion years left on Earth?”
ONLY ONE billion years left.
Better get a “Go bag” together.
Today there was a news report that the oil and gas companies have known for years that their fuel was causing global warming, but they did everything they could to hide this information and ridicule the very idea, which apparently you and many believe. Stay alert for additional news reports on this surprising revelation.
Regarding predictions. Even though hurricane paths may turn out to be wrong, the fact is the hurricanes still do exist, and hurt plenty of people even if the path is guessed wrong.
You have to be stupid and gullible to believe those “news reports”, and I am not.
I suggest that you carefully study the contents of co2coalition.org, and try to recover your ability to reason.
