Shock study shows how 42M recipients spend their food stamps - and they're not buying broccoli

An alarming study has spotlighted how 42 million food stamp recipients spend their welfare handouts on ultra-processed junk food.

Coca-Cola, Sprite and other soft drinks are the most commonly-bought items via the $135 billion-a-year Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a new study says.

Candy, potato chips, frozen pizza, ice cream, cookies, and other ultra-processed food dominates the top 20 items, says a report from the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC).

Report author Matthew Dickerson says recipients spend 'spend significant portions of their allotments on junk food.'

These 'non-nutritious foods' include 'sugary beverages and ultra-processed foods, which can lead to poor health,' says the 35-page study.

The prevalence of junk food is another reason to trim SNAP, which has ballooned this century and gets recipients hooked on handouts, says Dickerson.

The research comes as Washington lawmakers debate the text of an updated farm bill, with Republicans gunning to cut some $27 billion worth of nutrition program funding over 10 years

But it’s income based. In Oklahoma, It’s up to $212/month.

A “shock” for whom?! Most of us have seen it for decades. I’ll never forget going to the post office with my mom & seeing our neighbor in the food stamp pick up line. (1970ish). She was in her mink coat with her Cadillac parked in the parking lot. Decades of fraud & poor food choices.

Then why do republicans want to “pay families to have children”?? Not a single person who has witnessed children living in squalor while in state and federal subsidies and direct payments?
These women will spend hundreds on hair and nails and dad will have boats and four wheelers on taxpayer dollars meant for children.

SNAP is supposed to be for food. Unfortunately it seems lobbyists from companies that helped build the obesity pyramid had more than just a small influence on what counts as food for SNAP purposes.

Most welfare types would not touch nice healthy whole grain bread at all-never mind the squash. Instead of healthy oats, they eat the most processed of all food-boxed, sugar coated cereal. If people don’t cook, they are not going to eat fresh organic food...

As long as I live in a rural area where we grow food, have apple orchards etc, my prepping can include have healthy food. I do have whole grain flour and brown rice as prep supplies, but there is a retail organic mill not too far away. And we all have our own gardens and/or chickens, etc, as well as many working ranches around, so the prep is a little different. I tend to be a bit of an end-timer, but I’ve lived in the country most of my life, so never prepped in a city...

I might buy myself a salad kit as a big treat.

And it’s not just food stamps, is it.

For anyone still wondering why rent and taxes keep soaring, a case in point from NYS...

In Indiana a senior gets very little. I had a friend who was a working poor senior and she got 15 dollars a month.

Now they get some money through advantage plans and medicare/medicaid. How long that will last is unknown.

Not as bad as it was fifty years ago, when they all showed up at the liquor store on the day they were delivered and cashed them in for 50 cents on the dollar.

SNAP should only be for rice, rolled oats, whole wheat flour, and canned veggies. Good cheap nourishing food. It would be easy to program the system to allow only these foods for the snappers.

"Food stamps aren't intended to help people who need nutrition assistance. They're designed to subsidize grocery store chains and major food producers."

And don't forget about the buying of votes.

“””” liquor store on the day they were delivered and cashed them in for 50 cents on the dollar.””””

When I was poor and starving I would buy food stamps for 50% and with my frugal shopping it made for a great improvement in my eating.

“Who do you suggest we vote for, then? If we don’t vote for a Republican or Democrat, one of them will win anyway.”

The result will be the same.

That is why you signed up at FR, to tell people to leave it up to democrat voters and for us to just stay out of it?

Stand behind them? I have faced them, as in checked them out. I hardly ever saw anyone buy anything halfway nutritious with a SNAP card.
