Red Lobster has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection days after shuttering nearly 100 restaurants across America.

The seafood chain, which has closed restaurants in 27 states, has been struggling with rising lease and labor costs in recent years and also promotions like its iconic all-you-can-eat shrimp deal that backfired.

Demand for one such recent promotion overwhelmed restaurants, reportedly contributing to hundreds of millions in losses.

Lol. Sizzler had an all you can eat shrimp deal back in the 90s. The deal was they bring you 5 shrimp. Then you ask for more and wait 5 minutes until they bring you 5 more. Repeat. Lol.

True. I don’t get the hate for OG. It’s passable. Not great. What do you expect for a chain brand?

They should kept the endless for a limited time like in the old days. Making it permanent was a boneheaded move.

Okay, I’ll point out the elephant in the room.

Red Lobster was insanely popular with the melanin intensive. I live in a state that is about 3% black and they were 90% of the clientele at our local establishment. I had a family member work there and ooooh the stories they told.

Buying one all you can eat meal and four drinks to feed a family of four.

A party of over 10 (hard to get a count because they kept changing tables and people came and went) that dined and dashed.

A family of six who ordered some of the most expensive food on the menu, ate it all, and when they we done complained to the manager about the quality and wanted it comped.

I could go on, but you get the idea. It was corporate policy to NOT confront in these cases. You were to VERY politely state the fact that money was owed for the meal, but if the customer insisted - especially if that customer was a POC - then give them whatever they asked for. THAT is why they were so popular with a particular demographic and THAT is why they are going out of business.

Outrageous prices for flash frozen precooked meals re-heated in a 500 degree oven, then served by sultry wait staff.

Surly - if they were actually sultry it might partially justify the prices. :)

They brought them in already cooked. You have to boil them alive. This way they boiled them out of sight.

Jesus did away with all the dietary laws in the New Testament.

No, He didn't. He did away with some laws dealing with foods sacrificed to idols, blood and strangled animals. Sorry, no pork in Heaven.
