It was actually much older than 48 years. Reports are the helicopter was used by the U.S. military in the 1960s! It was already at least a decade old before Iran got it.

Helicopters apparently don’t do well in mountainous areas with dense fog.

Iranian President, Foreign Minister Killed in Helicopter Crash
It remains unclear what caused the crash.

Iranian state media reported on Monday that President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister, and several other officials died in a helicopter crash in the northwest of country. Iran’s supreme leader has also confirmed the deaths.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who holds ultimate power in Iran, said on the social media platform X that he had received “the bitter news of the martyrdom” of Mr. Raisi and his entourage.

“This bitter tragedy took place while he was serving the people,” he said.

Mr. Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the province’s governor, and other officials when the crash happened on Sunday.

A search and rescue operation was immediately launched in the area of the crash site. Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency later reported that all passengers aboard the helicopter had been “martyred.”

The state-run IRNA news agency also posted a similar statement on X, declaring that Mr. Raisi and his entourage died in the crash. It remains unclear what caused the crash.

I'd laugh if it were a suicide pilot yelling allahu akbar

I also worked with some Iranian students. Fairly bright people, but I was pretty much always aware that they were on student loans and a return home would guarantee the loans would not be repaid.

Though one of them did a tour of duty in the Iranian Army during the Iran/Iraq war, spent X months on the Basra front and rotated out on leave. He didn’t return, left the country, and it was possible he could not go home. It was never clear to me.

Good technical minds from those two kids. Understood The System of the university for foreign students. [Note, university loves them. Non resident tuition much higher]

Overall, nah, if these guys were technically incompetent there would be no reason to sanction them for anything. We’re just generating another multi-generational enemy. They have the #2 largest natgas reserves in the world, behind Russia. Not a great enemy to make.

Way too much derisive chuckling about how old the helicopter might have been.

We are flying B-52s on active duty that are about 70 years old. Oh, and btw, the San Diego police fly that specific model of helicopter, as does the Canadian Coast Guard.

Bad weather doesn’t care much about how old your aircraft is.

CFT, especially with helicopters, is the main cause of course.

There is a saying and it goes something like this... There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots. It is not actually true because a lot of us have gotten away with stuff that should/could have killed us.

My wife and I live on a small airport. A few years ago, a very experienced friend of ours flew the airplane he was flying back from an airshow into the side of a steep hill in an area that he was very familiar with. This was someone who flew VFR (visual flight rules) in low visibility conditions many times, and it finally caught up with him.

We started out hang gliding, joined an ultralight airplane club which evolved into an experimental airplane club and finally a vintage airplane club. We knew this guy from when we were all into ultralight aircraft. The airplane he killed himself in was a high performance homebuilt experimental. He was the one flying, the guy who built it had less experience and was in the right seat. My wife and I had both flown with him previously and he took a lot of chances. We never flew with him after we got our own General Aviation aircraft.

What are those mountain goats doing up here!

Many years ago my wife and I used to fly to Southern California frequently to ride the roller coasters. One time we ended up diverting a long way to the east to get around some nasty weather. We ended up over the Northern part of Utah before we were able to start making our way back.

We were flying VFR at a high altitude on a westerly heading, so we were at approximately 10,500 feet. We were getting jostled around pretty good because of the strong headwind, the mountain range obscured by clouds below us, and the two weather systems coming together. As we were looking at the clouds to the North, we could see something solid poking through at about our flight level. It was surprising how well the snow-covered terrain blended in with the clouds.

It was Lassen Peak which is 10,457 feet high. We were close enough that some of the turbulence we were hitting was actually from the “rotor” that forms behind a big peak in windy conditions.

Fortunately, about the same time we noticed Lassen Peak the clouds started clearing out and we were able to make a straight line for our fuel stop at Yolo County Airport. Yolo County Airport at that time had the largest skydiving operation in California, probably in the country. And it turned out that it was naked skydiving day so my wife and I saw some other interesting scenery that same day.

Nonsense. The helicopter didn’t “crash”. The Iranian Government said it only had a ‘hard landing’.

Scary aero math:

“We were flying VFR at a high altitude on a westerly heading, so we were at approximately 10,500 feet.

It was Lassen Peak which is 10,457 feet high. We were close enough that some of the turbulence we were hitting was actually from the “rotor” that forms behind a big peak in windy conditions.”

Does VFR into IMC qualify as “martyrdom” for pedo-whorehouse-heaven admission purposes?
