Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi has been involved in a helicopter crash hours after posing for pictures with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and rescuers are frantically trying to reach the site. The aircraft was traveling in Iran's East Azerbaijan province near Jolfa, around 375 miles northwest of Tehran, when it suffered a 'hard landing', according to Iranian state television.
Rescuers were attempting to reach the site, but had been hampered by the poor weather conditions in the area. There had been heavy rain and fog reported with some wind.
The helicopter was one of a convoy of three and foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, Friday prayer Imam Seyyed Mohammad-Ali Al-Hashem and other high-ranking officials were also reportedly on the helicopter with the president.

I suspect that it could easily be the shoddy maintenance that ME cultures are famous for.

That was my thought- was it a reshuffling of power dynamics? Although so etimes an accident is just an accident, but when it comes to such high level people, why would they have risked traveling in a copter during such conditions?
Will have to wait to see what develops- but does make a person wonder.

Azerbaijan is a client state of Turkey.
A Turkey-Iran war could be in the works

I read their helicopters are old, from the 70’s. Even our new military helicopters have crashed in bad weather.

There was a group of helicopters, one of them crashed, the others didn’t stop, or weren’t in contact with the crashing copter enough to know where it crashed? Seems kinda ODD to me.

This is important, but it has less significance to Iranian foreign policy than it would appear. Iranian policy is determined mainly by the Revolutionary Guards/IRGC and the circle of mullahs around Khamenei.

Moments after the crash MOSSAD arrived with the package of repair parts which had been on back order.

The helicopter crashed close to a copper mine called Sungun. It’s located in between Jofa and Varzaqan in the East Azerbaijan province of Iran and it’s roughly between 70km (43 miles) to 100km (62 miles) away from the city of Tabriz, one of the largest cities in Iran and also the city that the president of Iran and foreign minister were headed toward.
The Iranian Red Crescent says they have deployed 14 separate teams to the region… as of now the teams arrived to the area, however not to the specific spot where the helicopter just crashed. The reason for that they say, is the harsh weather conditions.
40 search teams deployed to search for missing helicopter
Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem reports that eight ambulances are also involved, as well as drones. However, according to Fouad Izadi, a professor of world studies at the University of Tehran, the teams have been unable to contact those on the helicopter.
“That could be because the accident is very bad, or it could be because the area is not covered by the network. We have to wait and see,” Izadi said.
