This was the first round of discussions between the two countries since January. The talks were mediated by Omani officials, with this occurring nearly over a month.
Iranian officials held indirect talks with two Biden administration officials this week in Oman to de-escalate attacks in the Middle East, sources of the talks told Axios and Walla on Friday.
The two officials from the Biden administration were Brett McGurk, the US president's top Middle East adviser, and Abram Paley, who is the US envoy for Iran. The US made it clear to the Iranians what the consequences of their and their proxies' actions in the region might be. Additionally, the reports said that the US believes Iran has a lot of influence over its proxies in the region - whether they be Hezbollah, Houthis, or their proxy militias in Iraq and Syria.
The reports do not clarify who the Iranian representatives who participated in the talks were.
This was the first round of discussions between the two countries since January. The talks were mediated by Omani officials, with this occurring nearly over a month after the Iranian strikes in Israel last month.
During the discussions, US concern about the Iranian nuclear program had also come up in addition to the possibility of escalating violence.
The bigger picture The big picture behind this meeting is that the Biden administration is trying to prevent the crisis in Gaza from turning into a regional war, the reports noted.
US State Department Deputy Spokesman Vandante Patel told reporters in a briefing on Monday that the United States has ways to communicate with Iran to clarify its concerns. "The Biden administration continues to assess that Iran is not currently undertaking the key activities that would be necessary to produce a testable nuclear device," he said.
It will be interesting to see how they make things worse this time.
Gonna force Israel to give up
Only way Iran would come to the table
Traitors in US betraying Israel
Only explanation I can see.
Yep, haggling over the price. The US will pay big buck (less the transaction fees to certain individuals in and around Washington), the Iranian mullahs will send a bunch to their secret bank accounts, and the rest will be funneled to Islamic nutjobs to keep the wars going.
They want to bribe Iran to settle down until after Biden is reselected.
They probably promised regime change in Israel after Bidens reselection as part of a deal
You will not see any US demands for a ceasefire by Hamas and Hezbollah
Working out the details how to smuggle weapons to Hamas now that the the new docks are completed. The whole purpose of the docks was to bypass Israeli inspection.
The whole purpose of the docks were to bypass Israeli security and to offload Palestinians for relocation to the US and some parts of Israel. This has to be coordinated with Iran in case weapons are to be moved into Gaza on the new docks. The US is acting more like the ally of Hamas than Israel.
Obama/Biden diplomacy - what will it cost the U.S. to reduce the number of attacks??
The fallacy in your question is that nothing short of war and death can stop the attacks
It wasn’t the question, just that the Obama/Biden diplomatic theory is that money can buy peace, or war, or cultural changes, whatever their goal. They don’t seem to engage in seeking commonality, working out trade deals, etc.
If it is a face to face meeting then the manner of the cleansing of Palestine and the timetable is under discussion
