During the Holocaust probably more than half of Germany supported Hitler's policy toward Jews - but how many truly knew what was happening? If the German media had reported what was happening at Auschwitz and the other camps there likely would have been significant push-back by the German populace.
As a relevant example of the effects of what the media chooses to report, if you and the rest of your colleagues would push for the release of what actually happened on October 7th, with the killing, rapes, beheading babies, etc., public opinion would clearly favor Israel seeking to eradicate Hamas. That, however, would require you to deal with the potential loss of a voting block. For you and too many in elected office, the moral position is that position which gets you reelected.
