A teacher with the Mill Valley School District was found dead in the water off of Drakes Beach on Point Reyes on Wednesday, just a day after he was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a child, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
Darren Smith, 55, was arrested on Tuesday following a report that the school district filed with the Marin County Sheriff's Office on March 28, according to a news release. The Marin Independent Journal reported Thursday that after initially being booked into the Marin County Jail, Smith was released on $200,000 bail.
A Google Search preview of a page on the Mill Valley School District’s website appears to show that Smith taught fifth-grade band at Mill Valley Middle School (as of Thursday evening, the page appears to have been taken down). The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said Smith, who was on administrative leave at the time of his arrest, was detained on suspicion of violating two penal codes, including one defined as “Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child.”

Hmm.
It could be that he saved the taxpayers the cost of trial and incarceration.
Or it could be that he was innocent but could not handle the stress of the accusation and legal action.
We’ll probably never know.
When the criminal turns up dead, is the bail refunded?

Criminal charges are formally dismissed when a suspect dies before trial.
Sounds reasonable that he OD’ed on something.

Well that’s the thing. This, from the article:
“The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said Smith’s body exhibited signs of physiologic death, which occurs when major organs are no longer functioning”
Sounds like a fancy way of saying “He was dead.”
And suspect number one is bails bondsman who is sure to collect;) I cannot imagine any law abiding public school parent could possibly think of something like that. This has to be white color crime.

Sounds like someone’s dad didn’t trust ‘the system’ to see to his punishment in California. Can’t say that I blame him.
