Republican former President Donald Trump will address Libertarian delegates at the upcoming Libertarian National Convention in Washington, D.C., later this month. According to the party, this will be the first instance where a former President will directly address members, candidates, and leadership.
“Join us for a historic moment at the 2024 Libertarian National Convention as we welcome former President Donald J. Trump to the podium,” the official website for the Libertarian National Convention reads. “This momentous occasion will mark the first time a former President directly addresses our members, candidates, and executive committee. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear insights from a prominent figure in American politics and watch him engage with Libertarian ideals.”
In addition to announcing Trump’s attendance, the convention site also asks Libertarian Party members attending the convention and those interested in Trump’s participation to make a ten-dollar donation to vote in a poll to determine which topics Trump will address.
Additionally, the site is selling Trump-specific merchandise in what it refers to as “The Don Collection.”

ROTFL.
End welfare and handouts FIRST, and then we will talk about your political goal to remove the border barriers and fire the Border Patrol and allowing the entire world to move here.
" Agreed. Though it was my understanding that in the past 10 years or so, the libertarians aren't as staunchly open borders as they used to be.
“Though it was my understanding that in the past 10 years or so, the libertarians aren’t as staunchly open borders as they used to be.”
well, i quoted their current official platform regarding the issue ..
What the LP does is they learn to print less detail of what their positions are, to be less open and revealing.
Compare their mention of immigration in their Party Platform below with their full text version in post 12, they learn to not be so open.
3.4 Free Trade and Migration
We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Political freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals not be unreasonably constrained by government in the crossing of political boundaries. Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders.
Smart move. He also ought to take part in their debate, as Josh Smith (one of the more reasonable LP candidates) invited him to.
Trump is certainly closer to a libertarian than almost any other candidate in recent history....

Trump is actually a Populist.
noun
a person, especially a politician, who strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups.
“he ran as a populist on an anticorruption platform”
I guess this is OK. I guess trying to woo Homo voters known as Log Cabin Republican is no different than trying to convince liberaltarians to also vote for a conservative.
Wooing is good, especially to immature fantasy voters like Libertarians, Reagan did an interview to woo Libertarians in Reason Magazine.
He did. And doofuses claim that made Reagan a Libertarian.
They forget he made that claim in 1977 when libertarians weren’t so stupid as they are today.
Immigration is pretty much where the Libertarian party and I part ways. On the other hand, we are on the same accord where it comes to taxes and the 2nd amendment. Overall, I’d have no problem at all with a libertarian like Rand Paul as President.
That opening statement was typical Reagan looking to connect with the audience and disarm them, he then proceeded in that interview to sell conservatism and try to educate the libertarians on the excesses of their beliefs.
As far as the 1977 LP and today’s, they are the same.
Rand Paul is a Republican.
So will Trump become both the Republican and the Libertarian candidate?
That has been a part of the LP platform from the very beginning. I think strongly that it should be reconsidered.
He's much closer to the LP than RP. He just knows he can't get elected on the LP ticket. Might be able to today given his name recognition, but not when he first started.
He is what he is and that is a GOP Senator, not a Libertarian Party nut case.
You can’t just pretend and play fantasy.
I’m ok with shutting down the Nanny State first. They don’t ask me to set the agenda though...
I think if the border were private property... Most of the LP could be swayed on a property Rights stance.
Coupled with the LP’s stance on the 2A and defensive use of force to protect life and property... It could create a situation FAR more hazardous to border crossers than exists today...
Exactly, the welfare and benefits systems of America won’t be shutdown but open borders not only has powerful support but is actually being put into place almost, nothing like the true removing of all impediments and ending the concept of borders like the LP wants but enough to destroy us as it is.
So when the libertarians say end national borders and we will end the government programs and welfare, I say, do the welfare and government programs first.
Thing is... they’d prefer to do both. At the same time.
Same for nuking taxes, regulatory agencies, repeal all 2A/NFA laws both Federal and State, etc...
Also, all those juicy government subsidies going to various mega-corps? All gone. Returned to the free markets where they belong. No one would be “too big to fail”...
It’d be messy as all heck... but it’s LONG over due.
