Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) pushed back on comparisons between the politically damaging dog stories that plagued both his and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s (R) potential bids for the White House.
During Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign, a decades-old story about him tying his dog Seamus to the roof of his car on a family road trip became a political headache for the then-Republican candidate for the White House.
Now, more than a decade later, Noem faces a similar political firestorm that could doom her chances of being selected as former President Trump’s running mate in 2024. But Romney rejected the correlation.
“I didn’t eat my dog. I didn’t shoot my dog,” Romney said Tuesday in an interview with HuffPost. “I loved my dog, and my dog loved me.”

So the scared dog had diarrhea and the uncaring idiot pretending to be a human being didn’t stop the car periodically to walk the dog. Hope it splashed back on him.
Forbes reported this
“Mitt Romney may not have told the whole truth about the scandalous tale of his Irish Setter, Seamus, being strapped to the roof of his car during a 12-hour family road trip to Canada.According to a trusted Politicker tipster, two of Mr. Romney’s sons had an off record conversation with reporters where they revealed the dog ran away when they reached their destination on that infamous journey in 1983.
Mr. Romney’s wife, Ann, has previously said Seamus survived the trip and went on to live to a “ripe old age.” As of this writing, Mr. Romney’s campaign has not responded to multiple requests for comment on this story.”
That being said, it still wasn’t smart to mention it in her book.
Our enemies are going to look for any little thing to attack us with, and there was no upside to even mentioning the story.
I can state it is a more ethical choice, based on what I understand is right. It is more right to be merciful than not, even to dogs.
IS IT MOREMERCIFULTO BRING A DOG TO A SHELTER WHERE THE ODDS ARE OVERWHELMING THAT IT WILL BEKILLED AFTER BEING PUTINTO A CONFUSING STRESSFUL SITUAION?
An overwhelming chance that it will be killed is still a chance that it will be allowed to live over the certainly of your decision to kill it right there.
Back when i was growing up (and i imagine Ms. Noem too) nobody was under any illusion about what the shelter was. It was where you brought your pet when you didn't want it anymore. Maybe we told fairy tales to our kids about how some nice family would adopt it on a farm or something. look, all's I'm saying is that this was hunting dog with a purpose in a different time and place and culture. Condemning Noem for her actions in a society that virtually worships pets isn't fair or right.
It’s not about worshipping pets, although some people do get silly about their pets.
However, it’s up to the politician to understand the electorate’s sensitivities.
everyone who voted for her for governor of IF she’s the VPpick doesn’t care how the left is going to spin it. I don’t. She could have brought the dog to a shelter and the story would the same in the eyes of the left and the anti trumpers. She’s an insensitive dog hater.
I understand the farmer mentality, take care of it on the farm. I don’t hold it against her for taking care of it on the farm. It’s just my ethical position to give an animal a chance to see if it can be fixed, because it sometimes can be. I’m not a once and done person, if what the animal is not too egregious.
I know many other urban people wouldn’t understand, however.
