New Biden climate rules could shutter remaining American coal plants
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | April 26, 2024 | Lisa Friedman and Coral Davenport

The Biden administration on Thursday placed the final cornerstone of its plan to tackle climate change: a regulation that would force the nation’s coal-fired power plants to virtually eliminate the planet-warming pollution they release into the air or shut down.

The regulation from the Environmental Protection Agency requires coal plants in the United States to reduce 90% of their greenhouse pollution by 2039, one year earlier than the agency had initially proposed. The compressed timeline was welcomed by climate activists but condemned by coal executives who said the new standards would be impossible to meet...

Taken together, the regulations could deliver a death blow in the United States to coal, the fuel that powered the country for much of the last century but has caused global environmental damage. When burned, coal emits more carbon dioxide than any other fuel source.

The new rules regarding power plants come weeks after the administration’s other major climate regulations to limit emissions from cars and large trucks in a way that is designed to speed the adoption of electric vehicles. Transportation and electric power are the two largest sources in the United States of the carbon pollution that is driving climate change.

Yes, and some countries are enacting mandates for 100% production of electric an elimination of the ICE. How Telsa isn’t raking in money is a mystery - soon they will control 50% of the the WHOLE automotive market - at least outside the US.

Are you counting the number of molecules in CH4?

CH4 IS a molecule, one molecule made up of 5 atoms, 4 hydrogen and 1 carbon.

True I said that not quite the best way

Oops lol 😬

I should have said atoms

Nonetheless 5 not 4

So the 75-25 thing has me going 🤔

BTW I see where he was going regarding approximate total molecular weight percentages though

Had you not shared your experiences, I wouldn’t have expected that level of indifference. But in doing so, I’m now in the know, but also not surprised given what we’ve collectively learned especially over the last 8 years.

You’re absolutely correct about the Left’s unrelenting desire for control where no concession is ever enough.

Methane is CH4 as in four atoms one molecule. Methane gas is individual CH4 molecules they don’t join together. So as a bulk gas methane is four hydrogen atoms for very one carbon atom. Hence the four to one mol it takes four mols of hydrogen atoms to one mol of carbon to make methane.

By weight. [rolls eyes]

Did you just finish CH101?...

Weight as in mass in a gravitational field...I think you mean mass as in atomic mass and that’s irrelevant when looking at stoichiometric equations. It’s the number of mols of atoms that matters hence 4 to 1.

Burning one molecule of CH4 releases one CO2 and two H2O. That ratio is fixed regardless of the mass of the atoms themselves. Burning methane will ways produce one CO2 for every two water. On a LHV basis equalized out for equal megajoules of thermal output methane will produce much less CO2 per megajoule because its only one in four molecules of carbon to hydrogen.

“Corporate executives used to be very conservative.”

Yes. Back when a lot of the executive ranks were filled with engineers, not lawyers and finance people. Meeting customer needs was paramount, not satisfying the ravenous maw of Wall Street.

I was thinking 5 if you count the Carbon atom?

I’m juggling my dinner 🍽️ lol 😁

What we cannot survive are the idiots that would actually vote for him.
