An Oklahoma man is facing up to 12 years in prison for having ammunition in his carry-on bag at a Turks and Caicos airport, according to a GoFundMe page for his family.
Ryan and Valerie Watson, the parents of two young children, were flying home from their island vacation, where they were celebrating a friend's 40th birthday, on April 12 when they were arrested at the airport.
"They had their lives turned upside down when they tried to return home, as local airport security found four rounds of ammunition unknowingly left in a duff[le]bag from a deer hunting trip," a description on the family's GoFundMe page states. "It was not noticed by TSA when leaving America. Now, they are facing a legal system that is unfamiliar, daunting, and expensive that operates differently than the American Justice System."
The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a travel alert in September 2023 telling Americans not to bring ammunition to the islands.

“our attentive TSA”
Bwahahaha! Please, you’re killing me here. You’ll be here all week, right?
Pretty attentive of Mr Watson too, keeping track of his ammo.
Should have stayed in his home state where itβs safe like me
These destination weddings, showers, bachelor parties, birthdays are ridiculous! I always decline.
Yeah, I went to visit my son at Fort Bragg in 2001 before he was deployed with the 82nd to Afcrapistan. I had forgotten to take out my ammo from my carry on suitcase when I was on a road trip. They didn’t catch it at the airport, thank God. But then I realized they were worthless.
All right, I promise never to go there.
I will never leave this country. I bet he wishes he didn’t, either.
I suppose Americans travel to such places to save a dollar or two over similar vacation spots in the United States. To each his own.
But as for me, Iβll pass on rolling the dice and stay local.
Moral of the story: Never use your range bag as a carry on.
“A Turks and Caicos court confirmed that Ryan Watson was granted $15,000 bail on Tuesday for the ammunition possession charge”
If he can hop a boat to the Bahamas or D.R. that $15k will be the best investment of his life.
I would not put it past the locals to plant ammo on tourists. Then they can extort money confiscate boats, rape the women while they are in jail etc.
Memo: Most countries in the world also prohibit the wearing of camouflage clothing by non-military.
Also, the rest of the world has gun control.
That’s about right.
You’re missing out. Its a beautiful world out there with lots of things to see. I travel outside the country several times a year and have never had a hint of a problem.
I’m sure his wife will wait it out...
I once did the same thing on a United charter flight carrying Forest Service fire crews from Oregon to southern California. When I realized I was wearing it, I quietly took it off my belt and put it in a pocket, no problem.
The way I celebrate birthdays is to ignore them and pretend I am not another year older.
