House Republicans' already slim majority shrinks after Wisconsin member resigns following passage of foreign aid bill: GOP can now only afford to lose ONE vote to defeat Democrats
The Daily Mail ^ | 21 Apr 2024 | Jon Michael Raasch

The departure of Rep. Mike Gallagher shaves off yet another Republican from the already razor-thin GOP House majority, further weakening the GOP's already loose grip on power.

With Gallagher's resignation, House Republicans can only afford to lose a single Republican vote to get legislation passed along party lines.

If they lose more than a single GOP vote, Republicans will need Democrat support to pass any legislation.

As it stands, there are 217 Republicans and 213 Democrats and five vacancies in the House.

This means if two Republicans vote with Democrats the vote would be 215 - 215, and a tie results in a loss for any measure.

Further complicating the matter is the Thursday announcement from Rep. Jake LaTurner, R-Kan., that he will not seek re-election this fall.

'It is time to pursue other opportunities and have the benefit of spending more time with my family,' LaTurner wrote in his announcement.

He said the 'dysfunction' of the current House of Representatives is 'distressing,' an apparent nod at the chaos that may have prompted so many members to seek employment outside of Capitol Hill this cycle.

My take:

Politics is not for the honest. Maybe initially, the Mr smith goes to washington kind of thing, and it is nice to get one evey now and then, but the constant temptation is likely very strong, and ultimately, most with normal character do have a price. Only the amount varies.

The price may be a few million, or a bevy of irrisitable babes (or males for those types), or perhaps NOT killing your first born, and pets, and burning down your house.

Realize, those several billion that go missing regularly, and the several hundreds of billions that get washed domestically and via foreign aid do end up somewhere, ind it is not into the pockets of honest people.

Lot of money and power at stake, so "drinking the potomac water" is likely easier then self immolation.

The same thing in 2018. They are resigning to help insure a Democrat majority so that they can get Trump.

I've been saying this over and over that they're following the 2018 playbook. The GOPe hates Reaganites, Tea Partiers, and MAGA and have and will do everything they can to thwart them. The RATS don't need to blackmail the GOPe scum. They willingly get us in the back, front, or wherever else they can shiv us.

The ability of either party to impose any level of “party discipline” went away with the ban on legislative earmarks.

Mike Gallagher has further disgraced himself with his cheap stunt, just another demonstration of the fact that “professional politicians”, in general, are a truly despicable, unprincipled bunch of SOBs ... and this fact is nothing new throughout American history.

“I don’t understand what’s going on with these resignations...”

The threat of finding child porn on their computers might have done it. Even if they have to place it there.

All this handwringing when I applaud him standing on his principles. The writing is on the wall: democrats have irrevocably destroyed this country and if the Republican Party won’t stand up as one and politically water the tree of liberty then why stay? Why participate? The citizenry who could’ve stood up for Constitutionalism are cucked and the Republican Party has been a party of cucks since the 1890’s. Better to ditch now and live to fight another day than be a dimwit eunuch Republican in congress.

Would it really make a difference? The GOP vote right along with the Democrats.

as far as I’m concerned, the house could adjourn until January and taxpayers would finally get a break.

Good. Let the GOP fall to the wayside. Let it all go to complete shite. That is the ONLY way we will ever have a chance to right the ship. Voting (R) is just electing assistant Democrats.

A good 2/3’s of Republicans are essentially traitors. We need a new party.

I don’t understand what’s going on with these resignations...

Our elected leaders are realizing one-by-one that they have zero power to effect policy. They are puppets of forces that they are powerless to oppose. The permanent DC bureaucracy controls everything including our elections. About 90% of Americans don't realize it yet.

Republicans in general and conservatives in particular are on life support now.

The concept of self-government is on life support.

The Stupid Party is named that for a reason.

The Demonrats are evil, anti American communists and wrong about everything, but they show a solid front and fight.
