On a rainy Wednesday in Dallas, powerful Republican donors gathered at the home of billionaire Kelcy Warren to help save the political career of House Speaker Dade Phelan.
The speaker of the House is considered a titan of Texas politics, wielding the power to shape legislation, appoint committee leaders and amass a robust campaign fund to spend on protecting incumbents and other allies.
That power wasn’t enough to protect Phelan from a surprisingly strong challenge by David Covey, who rode support from former President Donald Trump to a top finish in the March primary and forced Phelan into a precarious primary runoff on May 28.
Covey harnessed growing discontent from the Republican Party’s right flank, which blamed Phelan for the demise of favored legislation, including public funding for private school tuition and several border-security initiatives.
If Phelan stumbles, centrist conservatives could find themselves with a shrinking role in the GOP and on the losing end in the fight over control of the Republican Party.
“For the center-right wing of the Republican Party, this is, in some ways, the last stand,” Rice University political scientist Mark Jones said.
Phelan’s Dallas fundraiser was a clarion call for establishment Republicans and conservatives who see value in saving Phelan’s career.

You can’t make an omelet without breaking some rotten eggs.
It sounds like everyone needs to help his opponent.
“establishment Republicans and conservatives who see value in saving Phelan’s career.“
Conservatives? BS , this prick is nothing but a rat tool.
The Highland Parkies(Highland Park is an exclusive part of Dallas) can’t let go.
‘Centrist conservatives’, aka RINOs.The Hispanic voters in Texas are becoming more conservative as they also see first hand what an uncontrolled border does to property values, taxes, and the job market for factory-class families. A realignment, similar to the massive realignment of Southerners from yellow dog Democrat to solid Republican, as more individuals of all groups see that their freedom, health, and financial present and futures are threatened by the adult children that form the attack wing of the Democrat Party.
PHELAN NEEDS TO GO, HES A DEMOCRAT RINO.
KICK HIM OUT.
that skid mark needs to go
He’s too useful to the swamp.

About says it all….
This is the guy who attempted to knee-cap Ken Paxton. He needs to take the L in a big, big way. He’s nothing but an assistant Democrat.
If we ever want to have election integrity in Texas and eliminate RINOs running interference for Texas DemocRATS then powerful Uber-RINO Dade Phelan needs to be defeated by David Covey in the May 28th primary runoff election.

He is a corrupt politician who has formed a cabal with the opposition party to defeat his own party.
Hopefully Phelan’s attempted impeachment of AG Paxton will be the death of his career, and the end of the Bush era in Texas. The entire hit by the Bush wing was a travesty. And that’s in addition to Phelan’s “Austin values” that have no place in a conservative party.
“Dade Phelan conspired with all House Democrats and a few of his RINO buddies to make him Speaker of the House.”
And people still continue believe that the worst RINO is better than the best Democrat. They’re oblivious to the amount of damage a RINO can do.
centrist conservatives = Democrats in disguise
Is being a kept whore a career.
Two generations is about all it takes to produce a wastrel. It’s pretty much a universal law.
I wanna see a list of the donors, not a damned one of them will get any business from me or mine.
