Katie Couric said resentfulness stemming from globalization is driving the anti-establishment Trump voter to the voting booth in an interview with Bill Maher on his podcast 'Club Random.'
"I think that is a huge problem that we have to address," Couric said. "Globalization and the transition from an industrial to a technological society. I don't know if you've ever been jealous of what someone else has or resentful. It is such a corroding and bitter, almost vile feeling. I think that when people who are really struggling see people who have everything and are on top of that looking down on them. It is just a recipe for such anger and resentment and grievance."

The elites will be called upon, soon, to generate calories out of dirt at a magnitude that will feed 8 billion people. The elites won’t be elite enough to do that. They will, instead, have that nothingness substance called money created further to try to pay someone to do that work for them.

That was the explanation intellectuals gave for Joe McCarthy, Barry Goldwater, and George Wallace. They didn’t want to face the fact that they were in a privileged position themselves and benefited more from the way the country was going than others did — more money for them and what they wanted taken out of taxpayers’ pockets.
But in the post-war years a rising economic tide was making all boats rise. Lately, though, some have been benefitting while others have been losing. Finance and the public sector flourish while real production has dwindled. It’s not about envy. It’s about self-defense. It’s about the arrogance of a governing elite that doesn’t address the real problems of the nation.
