Atlanta News First reports that Atlanta taxpayers endured extensive queues outside the city’s Tax Assistance Center, but not everyone was looking for last-minute help from the IRS ahead of the April 15 tax filing deadline.
The center was open Saturday with extended hours, allowed individuals to engage directly with IRS representatives regarding their refunds, but the demand to do so led to hours-long waits under the sun.
A majority of the people in line had received an email or letter from the IRS stating they had to verify their identity in person. The notification went on to say their refund was being held until they did so. So starting as early as 6 a.m., individuals settled into lawn chairs, bracing themselves for the long wait before the center opened at 9 a.m.
“All I need to do is verify my identity, and that’s it,” one exasperated attendee said. “It’s a tiny process.” The sentiment echoed among the crowd, with numerous individuals sharing similar sentiments of inconvenience.
For Tynecia Thomas, navigating the IRS bureaucracy proved to be a daunting task. She lamented the challenges of seeking assistance through phone lines, describing it as a “hassle” and emphasizing her desire to access the funds she’s rightfully owed.
“I want my money; I work for this money, it’s my money, and I want it now,” Thomas said.
Despite the overwhelming turnout by taxpayers and the clear need for additional support, inquiries from Atlanta News First to the IRS regarding the lengthy queues remained unanswered by the event’s conclusion. The agency’s silence left taxpayers grappling with uncertainty about the causes behind the delays and the potential resolution of their issues.
Looking ahead, the IRS has scheduled one more Saturday opening on May 18, aiming to provide further assistance to those grappling with tax-related challenges.
To the extent one can, ALWAYS structure to have to send in a check.
Words to live by.
[Not my case this year, because reasons, but perhaps next year...]
Having to show ID is racist.
We want our America, we worked for our America, it’s our America and we want it back!
No America for those who don’t show an ID.
Same W-2s, same names, same address, same number of dependents, same everything all the way down the line.
But suddenly it was a problem.
We will see what happens this year. State has already refunded our $12.68. Not a word from federal.
Houston IRS office forced to close early after fight breaks out: ‘I ain’t doing no playing’
RE: Last year it took months for them to send us our under $100 because they claimed we were not who we said we were.
If identifying yourself via a legal ID is important for tax refunds, why is it dispensible when it comes to voting? <— THAT is the important question.
And honestly I do not think they give a hoot if you actually are the right person or not.
Yeah, I am being paranoid but this never happened in the past. Audits yes, but never the "we are holding your money until you prove you are you." Something is going on. And, as usual, it ain't good.
“I want my money; I work for this money, it’s my money, and I want it now”
Maybe that person should adjust their witholding payments, so that they don’t pay the IRS so much.
You can but you better keep an eye on when they raise things. For 2023 we had to pay over $1000 because of increases. Not a problem for us because we save it during the year. We were warned by the tax preparer that we could be fined for owing over $1000. They call it a failure to properly estimate tax fine. We have had the same amount withheld since hubby retired. That $1000 used to cover state and fed. We don’t have to pay state anymore but are paying a significant amount more to the feds. Have been trying to increase withholding since February with no luck.
Government just making sure that the people know who their masters are.
I can’t even get a city bus pass without ID

She is probably getting an EITC refund (i.e. no taxes paid in).
E-filing seems to avoid stuff like this for many people.
While in line they may have been passed by courtesy buses filled with illegals going back to their hotel rooms to watch streaming movies. Tax paid.

“The U.S. sees $150.7 billion yearly cost from illegal immigration, with policy shifts increasing taxpayer burden.”
ID required to receive a tax refund, but not to vote. If ID were required to vote, only real people could vote, just like only real people should receive tax refunds. Making people come in person to collect a refund check also helps the Deep State know where people are this year so it will be less suspicious when they vote for them.
Biden Admin is stalling-—down to the penny.
They have squandered your $$$$ on INVADERS & homeless.
There are multiple users of he same SSAN. The IRS is trying to determine which one is the real American -usually when a significant return is expected.. I had something like this when I had a large return coming. She asked questions about my pension distributions, what I filed two or three years an the light bulb clicked and she said, “your return will be issued in 10 days.’
This is also part of the big brother scheme to get information on everybody to go onto the big database.
